Back with a question (as usual!)
Hi everyone,
I was gone for about a month (finishing final exams and then a three week trip abroad). I'm back now and getting ready for my pre-op testing on Thursday. I caught a terrible cold on the trip and was fairly worried they would need postpone my surgery. I went to the doctor this week and got some serious meds and antibiotics (shot!) so I am keeping my fingers crossed that it clears up.
I'm getting pretty nervous about the whole thing. I've talked to a few people who tell me that it's normal to be nervous. I think at first I was afraid of complications. However, now I seem to be more afraid of life after the surgery. I know that I'm afraid of pain. I've never had surgery -- never even been in the hospital, so I am very worried about my level of tolerance. Really though -- I think I am more afraid of giving up my old best friend, food. I know this sounds crazy -- everyone, and I mean everyone has told me it is worth it, but I told my husband that I feel like giving up food is like cutting off my right arm. Tonight is my last night to eat "normally." My doctor wants me on a low carb diet the two weeks before surgery so that my liver will shrink (enlarged from diabetes meds). I really know that I have got to get control of my emotional eating habits. I think this issue and association with food in my head will be the battle of all battles for me. Has anyone seen a counselor for this? I've heard several people who see the same doctor in Nashville, but I can't remember the name. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Marian

Hi Marian! Just wanted to say welcome back, missed u on the boards! Hope u had a great vacation and good luck on your upcoming surgery. I am sure u will do fine!
Tammy
PS -- I didn't know that a low carb diet would help to shrink an enlarged liver (learn something new everyday! lol). I have been on a low carb diet for the last 6 weeks and I feel so much better. I have more energy and I have lost approximately 20 lbs!

I've had several surgeries. No it's not always fun but what ever the problem was it was fixed.... Don't be scared.. I think back to some of the surgeries I have had and really can't remember a lot about how I felt and what I went thru. one more thing FOOD IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.... I think that once I lose the weight I will feel better and want to do fun things like I use to.. I want to find comfort in something other then food.... I have not been to any but I've heard that the support groups are really great...ask your doctor if there are any groups where you are..
Hang in there you'll make..
