Any of you on disability and had surgery? I am currently in the approval process (disability) and looking for info. I am 27. Would I have medicaid or medicare once approved?? I'm a little confused about that. I'm wondering what if any differences I need to be aware of in getting surgery? Is it hard to find a surgeon that accepts medicaire/caid? What's the approval process like?Thanks... True

Hi True, are you applying for Social Security Disability or SSI? Social Security Disability is Medicare. SSI will allow you to also get medicade. Some needed advice, if you are denied your disability, don't give up, appeal. It took me two years and the last appeal, I got a lawyer. The day of my hearing before a judge, I was approved. Two months later I got my first SSI Check, a week later my back pay, and the next month I started getting SSD. Six months later I received that back pay as well. My son gave up after the first denial on his claim. We didn't know then about appealing everytime. Just like your insurance for surgery, if denied, don't give up, keep appealing. Medicare doesn't give prior approval for the surgery and they have certain guidelines that must be met. Oh, and when you receive your disabilities check, keep all receipts. After about 3 years, Social Security may do an audit of how you spend your money. Without the receipts, they can force you to pay back every penny. I staple my money order receipts to the bill receipt. Every month I start a new envelope. I mark it with the month and year. At the end of the month or when the money is gone, the envelope is sealed with tape and filed in a box. Neater, and easier to keep tracked of vs. just sticking them in a shoe box. Some surgeons will accept Medicare/Medicade. Some won't. You will just have to make a lot of calls to find out if they accept your insurance. Then you start your research and doing the things that the surgeon requires and what your insurance requires. May God guide you on your journey. Kathy

I'm applying for disability. So medicare... thanks. yeah i know disability can be a real pain to get. I've been attempting to get surgery through other means for 5 years so this is my last resort. I do not plan on being on disabilty indefinitely... getting surgery is my main objective and I've exhausted all other forms of insurance in the persuit so now medicare is my option. I am young and expect a year after surgery that i'll not be disabled anymore. It really would be smart of them not to deny me since I will remain this way as long as it takes them plus a year or a die whichever is first! Collecting backpay the whole time... They would save money to just give it to me now,but who would listen! Sometimes the system makes no sense. My whole future is resting on how they decide which should be very soon for the first attempt since I applied in Jan. I was wondering why your having such trouble w/ getting a surgeon? I was just curious you don't have to tell me if it is difficult. Thanks for all the info.True

You have a 2 year waiting period from the time that your first check is sent on Social Security Disabilty before you will be eligible for Medicare.
