Hi! I'm new to the site. I just got insurance approval last Thursday, and I have my first appointment with Dr. Olsen at Centennial this Thursday. What can I expect at the visit?

Well I don't have Dr. Olsen but I'm assuming you mean the first consultation visit. At my first visit I was weighed, spoke with the nurse about aftercare, talked with the doctor about the surgery and its risks, and spoke with a financial counselor about payment, insurance, or self-pay. But if you've already been approved for coverage, have you had this consultation yet? I'm a little confused. I didn't file insurance until after my consultation. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your response. I can definitely understand your confusion. This is a crazy process. I went to the informational seminar where I received the packet to help me get approval. I had to attend atleast one of the aftercare support groups, psychological support groups, and get insurance approval before seeing the doctor at all. I have done all of that, but BCBS made me have my mental health evaluation before they would approve me. I did, and now I finally get to meet Dr. Olsen. I just don't know what to expect. I guess I am just antsy. Do you have to pay alot up front? My insurance covers 85%, but I don't know when I have to pay the rest. I have saved up, but I'm not sure if it is enough. Thanks again!

I paid $200 at my consultation visit, which if your insurance is covering your WLS, you can probably turn that in and get reimbursed. I won't; I'm self-pay. Dr. Olsen's staff will probably tell you how much you will have to pay before surgery since they now know that your insurance will pay 85% of the surgery. Hope all goes well. L

Hi Tracey, Congradulations on being approved. I can't tell you what to expect at your first appointment, most Dr.'s do things differently. The one thing they will all discuss with you is about the surgery, what they still need done, and check you out. Other then that, it just depends on what your Dr. wants done. Good luck and May God Bless you on your journey to becoming a loser. Kathy
