OT: Gatlinburg/Pigeon Ford Trip
Hi! I'm from central IL and we'll be traveling to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Ford area the 1st week in April. It's for a family reunion on my husband's side. They've already got the lodging taken care of - so that's great... but I was wondering if anyone can give me some good advice about what to do, where to go? I know the major touristy things - but was hoping for some 'insider' info about mom/pop type places, scenic drives, places the kids would like (ages 5 and almost-two), pinic areas etc...
Thanks so much!!! Katie

For scenic places, you must go to Cades Cove...the earlier in the morning the better. It's less travelled at that time and also you see so many wild animals at that time. We saw deer, bear, turkey and all kinds of things. There is also a place in Gatlingburg called the Roaring Fork motor trail...it's a must see for a scenic drive. For the kids at that age...the Deer Park and Petting zoo is wonderful. The deer and all the animals are tame. You go in their cages to feed or pet them. They also have pony rides. My kids loved it when they were small like that. For picnic areas, go through Gatlinburg and into the National Forest on the other side. There are picnic areas by the river....beautiful areas! Also the Arts and Crafts community in Gatlinburg has some beautiful scenery One of the best, and least expensive places to eat is the Captains Galley at exit 417....10 miles up the highway from the Pigeon Forge exit. It's off the beaten path of tourists but right off the highway. They have good healthy choices and they give the members of your party who eat the fried food plenty to eat. I used to live in that area and was an auditor at Dollywood...if you need other ideas or have specific questions, feel free to email me directly. Hope this helps!
