Anyone that can possibly help me!!! I'm going nuts with this mess!!!
I live in the Clarksville area and have been trying to go through the testing process to get approved for surgery. I have bcbs of tn ppo and they started covering the lap-band procedure as of 9-1-04 but there is an exclusion in their policy to not cover anything that is coded as obesity. Here's where the problem lies....I had a baby in march and was very obese and my ob/gyn talked to me about surgery at that time and I just couldn't bare to think about it, so we made a deal that I would try to lost weight over the course of the next 6 months which I did lost 20 and then found it again. I went back to talk to him and told him this was the surgery that I wanted and he told me he would get the sleep study, psych eval and dietary consult set up for me....little did I know at the time how it was going to be coded and didn't know about the obesity exclusion in my policy....nurse came in and told me my insurance would cover sleep study and psych eval but I would have to pay for the dietary consult which I found out was only $72 and I thought that wasn't bad...then when I got the bill for the office visit and the insurance didn't pay for it I assumed that it was a mistake and called the insurance company and that's when they dropped the bomb on me and told me how it was coded and what that meant. Needless to say, all of this was found out after I had the sleep study and the same dr's office told me that the nurse should have never told me that it was covered since they were not performing the procedure and that it was my responsiblity to check all of this before I had it done, and after I had it done I did call the insurance company and they couldn't really tell me anything!!! So now I may have to pay $1200 for sleep study which I can't afford all because of this code....has anyone else had a problems like this?? or can anyone offer me any help?? I am so ready to pull my hair out
Thanks,
Jenny
P.S. Monique if you read this I sent you an email asking about this since it looks like you and I had the same insurance and you feel about them about the same as I do!!!
Jenny,
Call the people who did the sleep study and see if they can re submit it as possible sleep apnea. You might have to call your pcp and have him tell them to do it this way. Who did the sleep study, which company? I do hate them too.(bc/bs) We pay them over $7000.00 a year for coverage and they don't really cover squat. Let me know if I can help you with any questions.
