Seven weeks post surgery, some problems keeping food down...

I am seven weeks post-surgery (RNY).  I have had three stenosis dilations and an "egd only" within those seven weeks.  I feel great, but am having trouble getting any type of solid food to stay down.  Yogurt is about as solid as I can "keep South."

To prevent protein malnutrition, I am consuming whey protein isolate 2oz. shots twice daily.  This is giving me around 76 grams of protein.  Water is not a problem.  80 plus oz. daily.

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can "retrain" my body to tolerate something other than yogurt?  I am beginning to have a little luck with baked, very-flaky fish, such as cod or tilapia.   How much longer can I expect these problems?  (I am not unhappy with my surgery, at all.  I have lost well over 50 lbs. since surgery and feel great.)

Thanks in advance for your advice.

David, Terry has it right at the stage your in the food has to be very moist. Regular Starkist Tuna was even to dry.  I went to Bubble Bee Tuna it comes in 3 flavors and I could eat it out of the can, twice as moist as Starkist.  But what ever you eat make it very moist.  Good Luck  C'ya Bob

I agree with everyone, moist is the key right now. I'm just a little over 6 months out and up until the last month, most everything has had to be moist, some kind of sauce or something. I'd recommend trying to use some of the fat free gravies or low fat cream of mushroom or chicken soups with meats, things cooked with moist heat (like in the crock pot). Other things that should work well for you right now are low fat cottage cheese, fat free refried beans, soft scrambled eggs and I got alot of my protein early on from skim milk (and still do), but see what your program recommends, as I know some programs shy away from milk, not sure why other than that some people have a lactose intolerance. In addition make sure you're chewing until food is about to the consistency that it would be if you ran it through the blender (about 20 to 25 times) because that's what your new stomach needs now. My wife had alot of problems with food early on that I didn't, and we finally tracked it down to she wasn't chewing enough. If you can't chew it to that consistency don't swallow it, it's not worth getting sick or it getting stuck.

Good luck, I promise it gets better and easier week by week.

Hang in there Doc!  Someties it takes a while for things to level out.

The guys are rigth, moist is the way to go.  My wife made me chili for a long time.  That was about all I could muster for a while.  I'm 20 months out and doing fine.

So, hang in there!Bald Is Beautiful
