I am scheduled for RNY tomorrow morning.  I have been reading these boards for a few months now taking in all the info everyone has given.

Just one question for everyone:

What was the worst part of RNY surgery or hospital stay?

Love to know what I am in for.

Thanks.

The pain from the drain was really bothersome to me.  They didn't give me enough pain meds to take home from the hospital, and we had a four day weekend so I couldn't get any refill.  I survived, and now I'm two weeks post-surgery.

Try to find as many non-sweet protein supplements as you can.  The sweet stuff is great for about a week, but gets old FAST.  The special K protein powders (strawberry lemonade and iced tea) have about 5 grams of protein and they just mix with water.  They aren't too sweet and you can sip them all day in between whatever.  Every little bit helps.

Good luck!

My body reacted to the stress of the surgery by sending my glucose through the roof.  So the whole time I was in the hospital they checked my sugar every hour.  Being woken up to have my finger *****ed every hour made me cranky.

But I have to say since that was the worst part...I got off very, very lucky.

I, also, did very well in the hospital.  No major issues.

The things that I hated were the IV tower thingy that I had to "drag" around with me everywhere that I went.  I also HATED the Foley Catheter.  I cannot tell you how much I hated that thing!

My recommendation would be to make sure that when they say to get up and walk... DO IT!!  You will feel much better, and your body will thank you.  Don't just stay in bed all day.  I walked so much that the nurses stated making comments about how much I was walking!

Good luck, you will do fine.

The worst part was drinking.  I did not want anything at all.  They kept bringing in cups of liquids.  I told my mother, "Please toss that."  The nurse overheard me and said, "Oh no, you have to drink all of those."  Just as I drank all night long, and finished up all those cups the next morning, no sooner had I got done that the nutritional services lady BROUGHT IN ANOTHER TRAY!  Oh my garsh! I felt like I had eaten a thanksgiving or Christmas dinner and was about to explode inside!!

The other thing was waking up right after surgery.  My entire abdomen felt really a weird sensation.  Not pain really.  Numb, tingly, kinda painful but not really. It was a feeling I had never experienced before.

THE BEST PART?  PAIN MEDICATION.

I don't know what a woman feels like after having a hysterectomy, but that is the first thing that came to mind the moment I stood up for the first time. It felt like someone had been playing the Board Game "Operation" with my body parts!

As for pain, none. Discomfort, yes. Like the others said, walk as much as possible and sip liquid even though you will want NOTHING to eat or drink. Jello and popsicles were my friends, Unjury protein powder was not. (gross!)

Oh... and hopefully you won't have the 4am vampire blood nurse. This lady woke me from a dead sleep EVERY morning at exactly 4am to draw blood.

Enjoy the ride and good luck tomorrow!!! You will do just fine.

Thanks so much for everyone's comments.  You all are so helpful on this site!  I love getting information for the real 'experts'.

Look forward to logging on again later this week and catching up on the boards.

The worst part of the hospital stay for me was after they took out the catheter I still had all of those fluids flowing into me so I had to pee every 2 hours.  It was so painful to keep getting in and out of bed but what can ya do?

Other than that, my stay was alright.  It's a hospital...you will be ready to go home!
