Be aware of Caffeine drinks
All,
I found out something that last Baptist Support Group and from my friend Paula.
Please be very careful about drinking anything with caffeine in it (coffee, iced tea, hot tea, etc of course no soda even diet!).
Caffeine is a diuretic, makes you urinate. It does not allow your body to hold onto liquids as long as normal fluids, i.e. water.
As an example I usually get about 72-80 ozs of water/crystal lite a day. Today I had one 24 oz cup of unsweet iced tea (my weakness with a packet of lemonaide crystal lite). Since I drank that, I've had to go to the restroom once every 30 minutes or so. Now I also drink water and crystal lite during the day, but I do not have to urinate as often as after I've had ONE glass of iced tea, or anything with caffeine (I don't like coffee, so that is my only source of caffeine).
If you do have that occasional iced tea, coffee, caffeine, make sure that you are NOT counting it as your fluid intake for the day.
I hope that this helps.
Michael.

Hey Michael, you are absolutely right. Caffeine is a diuretic. I was taught that coffee was all right, but could only be counted as half of your fluids. Example, 8 oz of coffee, could only be counted as 4 Oz of fluids.
Even decaf has a small amount of caffeine in ti. But you know what I drink most of the time, de-caf!
Have a good one!

I am diabetic and I have done the decaf thing for years. When testing my blood sugar I noticed that when consuming caffeine my blood sugar would soar. I discussed it with my PA and she agreed. Of course caffeine has no effect on my diabetic brother. So I wonder if a non diabetics blood sugar would be elevated when consuming caffeine?
Hey , great topic, I never realized how much coffee, tea, etc that I was getting before starting the investigation part of the journey. I was drinking a pot of coffee a day and what ever else I could get my hands on to drink. Yea I was a diabetic, just on of many co -mobidities to add to a long list. But as time goes on and you start to enter into the phases you realize, or should I say start taking note of: what is go'n in and out!!! uuuhhuummm well, then everything starts to make sense. I every once in awhile will get ahold of some caffeine, and let me tell ya, everyone knows. I am 15 mos out and still don't drink caffeine on a regular base. It was hard to stop, but I try hard not to start again. It also seemed to increase my appetite and heavens knows I don't need that. But everyone is different , and it may not be the same for you.
