Hello my friends,
Well I talked to Heather a lady from Centennial and they have recieved all my paperwork and medical records and that was good. BUT........I did find out that the DS was only for the super obese a BMI of 60 or more. I am so disappointed because I think that would be best for me but I do understand, now to do some research on the other gastric bypass.

That is just not true.
Many D/S surgeons do the D/S on patients with lower BMI's.
My BMI was 40 when I had my D/S.
Please fight for what you want and not what the doctor wants.
You are the one who has to live with your decision.

Please put your post on the D/S Forum. I will guarantee that if you put exactly what you wrote here, you will get an ear full.

If your doctor does the DS on BMI's of 40, that's great for you.  But a doctor is free to decide what his limits are.  I suppose that every OB/GYN knows how to do an abortion, but it doesn't meant they have to do them.  I'm not trying to be political, but I work in health care and doctors can refuse to do procedures.

Call Dr. Spaw's office in Nashville.   615-284-2400.    Dr. Husted is in Kentucky, and Dr. Smith is in Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.

The Centennial doctor has only just started to do the DS, and I asked about it in December, and he'd done 5 of them.

If your insurance is through the State of TN, then the BMI of 60 is part of the State of TN insurance plan paper.   So there's nothing the doctor can do about that.

But other than that, the DS is indicated wherever any WLS is indicated.

Good luck!

Hey Sonya, I'm sorry your insurance does not cover the DS.

It's best that you find out this way though.  My sister went into surgery planning on having RNY.  when they got inside, they found out they could not do it.  They ended up doing a VSG.

Research the different surgeries and if you have any questions, make sure you ask.  Ask here but also give Centennial a call and ask them

Hang in there!
Scott thumbs up

The way she put it to me was that the doctors would only do it on a super obese person that it was a very aggressive surgeryn I just want to lose weight I would have liked to have had the DS surgery but at this point in my life I just need to try anything to get a healthy weight. I will talk to the surgeon and see what he says about the DS. At the siminar he said to qualify for the DS you had to have a BMI of 40 or more so I will ask him about it if and when I get accepted and get a appointment

Ya know, Sonya, sometimes I think surgery is the easy part because one is under anesthesia and just doesn't care at that point.  So many of us have had set backs and disappointments.  Yet I am encouraged by your displays of courage and detrmination that you will not give up without a good fight.  So if you need some time to re-group, take it.  Then when you're ready for the next round, you'll have the strength to fight it.

If you really want the DS, do not give up.  It *is* performed on people with far lower BMI's.  I will be flying 1600 miles for mine and it will be totally worth it.  (I'm traveling not due to my BMI, but due to other factors).  I can have an RNY just 30 miles away, but that's not what I want.  If I am to have a WLS, I want one that will work long term, not one that I will need to have revised 5 years later.  This is just my opinion, but if you really want the DS you can have it.  Just keep looking.

Yea if you are going to go thru the pain of surgery you need to make sure what you are doing is worth it. I really want the DS and I am just gonna have to stress that when I see my doctor.

And trust me, I know how stressful this all is.  Yesterday, I was feeling utterly defeated in my quest for my DS and was giving up hope, but today I found just the right doc for my cir****tances.  You can do it!!  Good luck and hang in there.
