I Am Switched!!! (Cross Post)

I want to apologize for not posting before now. I've been oddly anti-social since surgery, and have been avoiding humanity like the plague. However, I'm starting to feel a bit more like myself. I have my first follow-up in the morning with Dr. Husted. I think he'll be pretty pleased.

I had a laproscopic DS back on December 19th with Dr. Husted at Lake Cumberland Hospital in Somerset, KY. My weight day of surgery, after pre-surgical fasting, was about 420 lbs. I was in surgery for five hours, and when all was done Dr. Husted said that all went very well. He'd wanted to remove my gall bladder, but hadn't been able to as my liver had become fatty to the point where it was wrapped around my gall bladder. Aside from that though, all was good. I was in the ICU for four days (they kept me on an insulin drip), and then was sent home. My sugar has gone down considerably since surgery (only 23 days ago, if you can believe it), I'm down under 385 already, and my stamina is beginning to come back. So I'm pretty happy.

Well, pretty happy isn't perfect. I am burping. A lo****er is making me sick (but I can drink unsweet iced tea just fine). A lot of foods that I like are making me feel sick to my stomach. I have regurgitated food three times since surgery (once was the first day, and it was jus****er). There seems to be no reason or rhyme to the burping. It happens when my stomach is long empty and it happens when I've just eaten. It happens in between. But, not always. I figure a few more weeks will see me a bit closer to right. Any suggestions regarding burping would appreciated!

So, that's me right now. I'm...actually, I'm pretty happy.

Congrats on the DS!
The burping for me is telling me I'm full or eating to fast. It takes awhile for you to be able to read your pouch.
I suggest journaling every thing with notation next to what you ate, something like this.
12:30 ate 12g of Cheese finished 1:00 felt a little sick (got the foamies I think I didn't chew good enough?).
This way you might start to see a pattern and/or your WLS team can, giving them a tool for early diagnosis.
Such as as stricture.
Sense your nerve endings have been severed the full feeling as you new it pre-op is different now and has to be relearned.
Burping followed by hiccups are generally signs your pouch is full and if you keep eating pain will set in.
Good Luck! C'ya Bob

You may also try 30 min. before your meal a cup of hot decaf. tea to seattle you tummy down before the meal.  just to relax it alittle. a sip on it. Then as Bob L said eat your meals in intervals. with journaling.  What schedule does he have you on as far as your eating (food Schedule) ? I know that I stayed about a week behind because I had felt because of my back history of healing slowly, that it would be in my best interest. So I just took things alittle slower then others. And you know it's alright. I drink my protein, sipped my water with flavor in it, because I'm not fond on plain water.  And ate the refried beans with the beef consome' added slightly, heated in the micro. with alittle shredded cheese on top. And I was good. And ate also the tropical fruite Sugar free papsicles. Hope this helps let us know sweetie. Hugs to ya and Big Congrats Barb

Welcome to the loser's bench.  Instead of thinking of yourself as anti-social, put a positive spin on those days: You were taking care of yourself after major surgery and now that you're feeling better it's HELLO, WORLD!  ISN'T LIFE GREAT?

Congratulations Sarah! Welcome to the place where being called a loser is a compliment!!

The only advice I can offer on the burpies is perhaps you are eating too fast for your new, still healing tummy.

Hi!   I'm in Nashville, and I had the VSG last January and will be having the sleeve portion of it in 4 weeks from today!   My insurance won't pay for my surgery out of state, but I had talked to Dr. Husted before he moved to California from Nashville - I guess that was 2 years ago.   I liked him a lot.

Sounds like you're doing great with the weight loss!   Some people get burping with the sleeve and the DS and some people get hiccoughs as a sort of sign that they're full and it's time to stop eating.   I've heard a lot of people have problems with water.   If you have tried it at different temperatures and none of it is good to you, then the unsweetened tea isn't bad at all as a substitute.   Especially if it's weak.

I understand that a lot of people have quite a shakedown period after they have the DS.   That's a lot of surgery to accustom yourself to all at once!   But, wow, it's amazing how well it works!

It's nice to meet another DS person in the Nashville area!
