Expenses, Vanderbilt, and My View on the topic

Marilyn, What a great topic...  Of course you always have great topics....

  anywho,

I think I will add my experience....  Remember, this is just my experience.. not a gold standard...  however, a gold standard facility did teach me.......LOL...

As time progresses with my WLS journey, I have found that my out of pocket expenses are diminishing...

Now this is just me (a Vanderbilt patient) I no longer spend money on protein..

A protein supplement is not required but does make meeting your protein goal of 50 - 70 grams (just out of surgery) per day easier...

I was taught that a protein supplement is beneficial during the full liquid phase and through the pureed phase, but my WLS support team at Vanderbilt did not want me to become dependent on protein supplement shakes or drinks... So they taught me how to achieve this through real foods and keeping in mind that I had a stomach the size of a thumb....

The wonderful nutritional staff at Vanderbilt went further to teach me that as my food intake increased, I would be able to get more and more of my protein through real foods, and at that point I would be able to elimnate my intake of protein supplements....

I do have a guide or some tips on looking for a protein supplement early on if anyone is interested...  just PM me or I could post it as a new topic if you like....  There are nutrition facts that need to be looked at as well as calories and sugar... so just let me know...

So.. I spend no money on protein supplements but a lot of money on chicken and tuna...LOL (but I would have done that anyway)

I spend money on a multivitamin...  (was gonna do that anyway)

I spend money on Calcium Citrate plus D (was gonna do that anyway, I am a woman over the age of 40)

I spend money on a prescription Vitamin Iron called conison (cost me $4 bucks per month) through my insurance (was gonna do that anyway, been anemic since my son was born over 18 years ago)

Spend $6 bucks per month on my B-12 injections...  That is my cost after insurance... I get the serum and the needles for just under $6 bucks....  Kevin gets a thrill out of giving me my shots so I must humor him....

So there you have it.... A day in a month of Trina ville.....  Not very exciting I know....LOL

Well I've actually been wanting to post this same topic. As Trina I don't take protein supplements any more. After my last blood work I was told to decrease my protein. I guess I'm stuck on eating my protein first which I really like Tuna, Steak, Yogurt (lots of Yogurt), lite Cheese, Skim Milk in my Coffee. I've really worked on the two-one bite thing Mel and Scott have talked about. My focus the last nine months has been protein and I'm just stuck on it. My menu is limited but like Bama eating is just something I need to do, not something I really have a passion for. So with that being said the same old food is fine by me and I was getting as much as 120g protein in a day through food now I've scaled it back to 80-90g. Well thats my two cents worth?? C'ya Bob

Good response Trina.  My nut also didn't want me to depend on protein supplements for my protein...but that was before spinal fusion and rotator cuff repair.  In order to heal from those surgeries close together I had to up my protein to 100-120 grams per day-so supplements!!  But, my real purpose of the post about hidden costs was for the vitamins, calcium, iron, biotin, and B12.  We can NOT afford to go the cheap route on these things-it may take 3-4 years for the defiencies to show up but when they do--it is SERIOUS.  Off brands and store brands will not suffice for long.  My two cents worth!

I agree this is one of those times you get what you pay for. You might save a little now on cheap low quality vitamins. But in the long run it might cost you in health and extra hospital stays. Which cost you loss time from work and deductable expense.
