Prednisone !?!
Michelle,
I am sorry you are having such a time with prednisone. I was on IV steroids this summer and they made me crazy, as well as hungry. Prednisone is a stress hormone normally made in the adrenal glands. When we are given prednisone for a long period of time, we do tend to gain weight. Part of that weight is because the darn stuff makes us so hungry and part of it is because it causes us to retain fluid. As a side effect, it also raises blood sugar, which in turn makes us even more hungry. Most people lose the prednisone weight gain pretty soon after they stop taking it. If I remember correctly, you are on it for asthma? Have you talked to your doctor about another type of anti inflamatory, maybe one that is inhaled instead of taken orally?

Perhaps you can talk to your doctor about your longterm prednisone usage, and see if he would be willing to give you a diuretic. That way if this weight gain is caused from the fluid retention, that will definitely help out....
I find it very stressing for us as wls patients to lose so much, and then have one medication, one health issue that will cause gain... or cause hunger, swelling, retention, etc... it really is very hard on our emotional well being. Esp as women, we tend to feel like a failure. I wish that were not the case! Hopefully he can get you fixed soon.
Spoke to my Dr. this morning and she is prescribing lasix, so that will help with the fluid. As far as coming completly off prednisone, she said that we will have to wait and see. She said that with the more weight I lose, the more of my meds Ill come off. Atleast one thing I know, is with the does she has me on, 40 mg, twice a day, I should lose the 34 pounds that Ive gained in no time flat, which is good casue I go back to see my surgeon on the 01/23/09.
