Did you have the Lap Band or the more serious stomach stapling? My husband said since I had Hypothyroidism it was a waist of time to have the surgery. But I hope to prove him wrong. I go to Dr.Antwi in Jackson and he believes it will work for me also. I was hoping to talk to someone to verify that people with Hypothyroid can lose with wls. Thank You......

I had the RNY bypass, I use to go to Dr Antwi as well and don't have to anymore since the surgery.  My PCP does my labs for my thyroid and I have been on the same dosage since about 4 months out from surgery.  I was taking so high a dose of synthroid at one time that I had to take two pills because they didn't make a dosage high enough in on pill.  I now take 200mcg daily.  My thyroid has been dormant for over 20 yearsl  I also dont have to take diabetes meds and I was taking 4 shots and 2000mg of Glucophage a day.

Welcome Sonya!

This is a very diversified board with people who have had all kinds of surgery, from different Docs and hospitals!  So the experience on the TN Forum is very unique!  Ask any questions you have, and of course answer any you know!

We do have a lot of get togethers planned each month, so watch the forums for upcoming dates and such.

Once again, WELCOME!

I see you had Dr. Dyer also I dont know who my doctor will set my appointment up with but I was wondering how long estimated does it take to do all the test to get approved? I was wondering because I was trying to do a time frame. Just an estimate, I know I have to do a sleep apnea test and a psych test I think, I was just wondering...Thank you for your welcome

I had my psych test at the Evelyn Frye Center.  Three fill in the dot tests and an interview with a counselor.  Took about 5 hours all together.  Got scheduled fairly quickly after my call for an  appt.  The painful part was the $295 that my insurance didn't cover.

I'm also hypothyroid and when on Synthroid, took a combination of doses to reach the amount I needed.  My PCP switched me to Armour Thyroid and I seemed to do better on it.  Since I'm relatively new, I haven't had my thyroid tested post-op and not quite sure how it will come into play with my weight loss.  I had a dog who was hypothyroid.  We put him on meds and wham!; he lost his excess weight immediately.  Go figure.  But I never lost a pound from thyroid replacement and isn't the thyroid gland about more than weight?  It's been a non-issue for me.

I also have very severe sleep apnea.  Hate wearing the CPAP mask.  Hate how I feel when I don't wear it even more than using it.  Looking forward to turning it into a doorstop.

Again best wishes and if you get frustrated with your insurance company, you're normal.  Just come back here and vent.  We're here for you.

My thyroid has been inactive since I was 21 years old and I am 36 now. I have never got my levels in order since. Im on synthyroid and I am scheduled to be checked again in a few days. A thyroid specialist in Memphis told my husband and myself that I should have already died from my thyroid. BIG SHOCKER...I am still hanging on and hoping for a miracle. Maybe weight loss surgery will help. I can only hope. I am on TennCare bcbs so I am sure it is gonna take awhile to get approved but maybe they will approve me.
