What do you think?

I undrestand what I need to do.  I just addicted to Carbs and have a hard time staying away from them pre-op.  I am just waiting on the time when I can use the tool that has been given me to my advantage.  You will not see me pushing the envelope.    I am committed!

That's the attitude Cathy!  Now just don't lose focus or make any excuses and you will succeed!

Ok here is what I would think... but not say...

You don't do protein? Ok so your hair will fall out.  I hope you look good with the Sinead O'Connor do

I sure am glad you don't count calories...  cause you are gonna be drinking a whole heck of a lot of milk to get the daily calcium amounts that you need.  I'd rather take my calcium 3x a day and be safe.

You don't know what else to eat? What about chicken. Grilled chicken has high protein. Oh I forgot. You don't do protein.

"I love to bake"...  yes and I used to love to eat too.  That's what got us in this mess.  Obese that is.

She drinks after meals.  OK go ahead, flush all those calories right into the toilet...  cause in about an hour you will be doubling your calories to fill your pouch again.  And, how about those low blood sugar episodes?

Now  Iam not going to lie.  This is what I would think.

Great responses!  Now what would you say if I told you this woman was 1 year out, and had lost 108 pounds?

This is a sad situation. I went to my pcp last week. She was so happy about my progress, anywho....She said that out of the many patients that she has had that has been through the wls, fail. After surgery they lose only 20lbs and off the program and back on the carbs and weight. She could not believe the difference. You thank she was proud???? myspace comments

I think that the 108 pounds is relative.  Did she need to lose 300...or just 108?  Many of the complications caused by noncompliance don't hasppen for at least a year or more.  The first 6 months are a honeymoon, most will lose no matter what.  I'm with Bob, I can't imagine going through all this and then not using our tool to the fullest.  And, losing one's hair due to lack of protein is really a MINOR complication, permanent swelling leading to congestive heart failure is what I would be most scared of!

When I first read the initial post, all I could think of was "There but for the grace of God go I."  Good Lord, I was so arrogant pre-op thinking that I would never do anything to sabotage my WLS.  I had co-workers that did and was determined that I would be successful.  I did my research.  I had pre-op psychological counseling with an emphasis on WLS and other healthful things for over a year.  Then I had my surgery.

The first couple of weeks were pretty good.  Was getting my protein in and close to all my water.  Then I had severe chest pains.  No emboli or pneumonia, but very potassium depleted.  Then came severe nausea and vomiting with an effort to take things in AND keep them.  Another trip to my local ER showed I wasn't dehydrated.  It is a day to day, sometimes hour to hour struggle.  Am I intentionally messing up?  No!  But I'm scared I'm headed for a metabolic meltdown somewhere down the road.

Rest assured, I do have an appointment with my doc about all this ASAP.  In the meantime, I keep praying it will get better and I will join the grateful and healthy losers.  If you want to throw some prayers my way, I'll be returning them with prayers of thanksgiving for the support.
