Is SPam a weight loss food?

Well, is it?

In my honest and obscure opinion it is! Hey, it is only 174 calories per serving and 7 grams of protein. So, does it work for you?

No, it is not a healthy choice in the world of foods! But it is something I use on a daily basis! I use SPAM to help me decide on goals. Right now, you are probably scratching your head and saying WHAT THE ...?

So, here goes my train of thought. This is something I learned several years ago and it has stuck with me. Kind of like SPAM does when you eat it.... It sticks right in the ole bread basket!

"S"... stands for small and specific! When we set goals, do we try to set it so far out that we can't reach it? No! We set our goals within reason. Quitting cokes before surgery can be done cold turkey. It is probably easier to cut back a few at a time. I know when I quit smoking several years ago, I kept a piece of paper in my pocket and wrote down when I had a cigarette. At that point, I would set a small goal of waiting an hour before smoking another one. Then it would be 2 hours before the next. I kept my goals small and specific and eventually quit smoking.

"P"... stands for practical! Practical can be defined as: Of, relating to, governed by, or acquired through practice or action, rather than theory, speculation, or ideals. Practicing what we preach comes to mind! Everyday, we have to set our minds on staying the course, making good decisions in the food we eat. Practicing our new lifestyle on a regular basis. If we screw up, guess what? We are only human, and tomorrow is a new day!

"A"... stands for achievable! Why reach for the stars when we know we can't get there? Are my goals achievable? When you decided to have weight loss surgery, what were your goals?  Have you re-evaluated them since surgery?  I know I have.  My Doc says I should weigh in at a goal of 180 pounds.  I trust my doc and believe he sees that as an achievable goal for me!

"M"... stands for measurable! Track everything!  That is the one piece of advice that I can believe with all my heart.  By keeping tabs on my calories, my carbohydrates, and the food I eat, I can truly see if I am doing anything wrong!  A friend of mine recently started gaining a little weight back.  When she went to her spreadsheet to look at things, she could pinpoint where the weight gain started!  Tracking helps us to identify where we make mistakes, but also helps us to stay successful!

I heard this a while back at a support group meeting at Baptist Hospital.  I only hope I can get is right:
"Goals not written down, are nothing more than dreams !"

So, when you set your plate for the day, are you going to include a side of SPAM along with those dreams?

Have a good day!

I actually laughed when I saw your post because one of the Many Diets I have been on was the Atkins Diet.  My DH brought home about three or 4 cans of Spam and said we could eat it on the Atkins Plan.   I opened the can...saw the fat just rolling off of it and couldn't make myself even try to eat it!   My DH did and lost weight in the process...........Not to mention what he did to his heart in the process.

I love the use of the word Spam and it gave me pause to laugh outloud too.

Thanks so much Scott for this wonderful post on SPAM.  I had never heard SPAM explained so well.  Sometimes when we're on this wonderful journey that we are on we do tend to forget about the little things, like writing a food journal or to continue setting goals for ourselves.  I know that in the beginning these things just seem to naturally happen and as we're loosing the weight some of us, myself included, get laxed and don't do these sorta things any more.  After reading this I think I'm gonna start SPAMming again.

Again thank you so much for the enlightment!

Most people laugh at Spam.  I used to love Spam as a kid.  We were poor; mom used to slice it up, fry it and throw on a piece of cheese.  It was good in between two pieces of good fresh smelling soft white bread and a little mustard smeared on. Oh it was GOOOOD.  I will actually admit that the sound of spam does not gross me out, even today!  I haven't eaten it in forever...  not since wls.  So I don't have a clue as to whether its good for us! ? !  I'll have to look it up on FitDay or The Daily Plate to see what the full stats are! LOL

I like your S-P-A-M meaning.  That is so cool.  Kinda like KISS means Keep It Simple Stupid! LOL.  Now if I can just memorize SPAM.  I've already forgotten what it means since starting my post. Jeesh.

S - Small and Specific

P - Practical

A - Achievable

M - Measurable

I've heard the difference between someone over weight and one who is not is the way they give directions. A person who never fought weight says go down 1st street turn right by the water tower then turn left by the gas station and its the blue house on the right. A overweight person says go down 1st pass the donut shop at the Taco Bell turn right go pass the KFC turn left by the Wendy's and its the blue house across from Pizza Hut! Well Scott I think being a ex-heavy even our acronyms are food related! Ha Ha!!
P.S. I use to love Spam fried with a couple eggs not bad eat'n!

Being a foodie, everything revolves around food!  One day I'll share my thoughts on Banana Splits and parenting!  That's a good one!

Have a good day!

Have you tried the Turkey Spam?  I love it...I brown it in a non stick skillet, and then melt down some cheese over it...I also use it in casseroles and salads...

Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only TRUE FRIENDS will leave footprints in your heart...And may that friendship have such a ONENESS that when one weeps the other will taste salt...Friends are like balloons ; once you let them go you can't get them back....So I'm going to tie you to my heart so I never lose you.

Scott,

You scared me.  Big Time.  I will say it again, Spam and potted meat....not the best protein option!

But your definition of S-P-A-M is well said.

Goals that are not written down are simply childlike wishes.  Writing them down is the first step to making them Reality.
