Medications
Good Morning!
I have one quick question. I am waiting for approval for RNY and am wondering about the medications I am on now. I understand I will (hopefully)be able to taper off and eventually stop them, but in the meantime, won't they go straight through my system without breaking down?
Any input will be geatly appreciated.

Hi Nancy! I'm still waiting on Bleu's chili!
That's a real good question! My doc took a look at what I was taking before I went into the hospital. When I was discharged, I had new prescriptions of meds that would work with my newly altered digestive system. So, I guess the doc will help with that before you leave!

It's important to have any and all your Doctors involved. My primary assisted with my high blood pressure, sleep apnia, liver disease and cholesterol med's. My endocrinologist regulated my insulin levels and my WLS Team assist with both. As of two months post op I was DRUG Free!! Hope the same for you. C'ya Bob

Wow! Don't be so hard on yourself. You've been human for a lot longer than you've been a nurse. You're taking care of yourself now; keep it up. As for medicines, they can be crushed or come in liquid form. I don't remember seeing where you planned to have your surgery, but I had a pharmacist consult before discharge from Centennial in Nashville. And if your surgeon is as compulsive about patient care and as patient as Dr. Houston is, all your questions will be answered.
(I see your doc practices at Blount. Maybe they have integrated pharmacy into their discharge planning.)

You can request a pharmacy consult before your discharge or contact your physician's bariatric nurse prior to surgery and he or she should be able to help you. I left the hospital on Christmas Eve so I didn't get the pharmacist, but my surgeon told me what to take and how. For a month or so, everything had to be crushed or liquid. I did find out that my hormones would not absorb, Lee's compounds it into a transdermal gel for me. And, of couse, no NSAIDS. I am off all insulin, Byetta, 3 oral hypoglycemics and taking 1/4 dose of glucophage, off inhalants, all respiratory meds in fact and off the antihypertensive.
