Post Puree food help!!
1. Im fully aware of the "no white" rule when it comes to food (ie. white rice, white bread, etc..).. was looking over my wife's gastric bypass bible and noted that there were some foods that were considered "good carbs" that totally floored me.. brown rice, wheat bread, etc.. My understanding was that no bread was good for me and any rice wouldnt set well on my pouch due to rice "plumping up" in the stomach and expanding.. so now im really confused.. is brown rice and wheat bread safe??
2. We're mixing up a chicken enchilada mix that we used to fix minus the flour tortillas.. while it will be intersting without the "wrap", when i was in the grocery store, i spied a package of corn tortilias. I was about to keep walking, but curiousity got the best of me.. I have to say, there was nothing in the nutrition facts that scared me, in fact, .5g of fat for just two corn tortilias raised my eyebrow. Low carb count (think it was @5) and 1g of sugar.. what should i have to fear from flat corn tortillas shells?
These are just my opinions, and my docs rules too... but brown rice, wheat bread, etc is for maintenance. It's not for someone newly postop or someone who still has a lot of weight to lose. Breads and rice even for me in maintenance are rarities.
As for tortillas, there are low carb tortillas available. One brand is La Banderita, and another is Mission. They are a little expensive... or you can also use Joseph's low carb pita bread depending on what you are doing with it... My opinion once again, whether its worth a hill of beans... is to stay clear of these until later in your journey. They can cause stalls. But maybe once a month if you want to treat yourself would be feasible... just not the entire thing though. Some people do not tolerate it very well cause it clumps up.
Even now, when I get wraps at Subway (non low carb) and places like that, I always open it up. It just acts as a container or holder for my sandwich, not food. I look at it in disgust thinking, "golly there is no protein or good value in that... and look how clumped up it is... all gucky." I cant imagine putting even half a regular wrap into my tummy.
Its not that you fear the shells. It's that they aren't really of value to you at this stage of your wls journey. Later. Not a forever NO, just later.
