Anyone have a revision with Houston/Olsen in Nashville, TN?
I have been a member on this board for about two years but have never posted. When I tried to log on to post, I discovered I couldn't remember my password. Thus, I am now New-But-Old.
I had RNY surgery May, 06 at Vanderbilt University with Dr. Alfonso Torquati. I lost 80 pounds in the first year but then the weight loss stopped. Fast forward 16 months and I have gained 35 pounds. I had an upper GI in July and have an enlarged stoma. My husband, sister, and best friend have also had RNY and have all done well. My surgery has seemed different from their's since just a few months out. I did it all, protein, water, exercise, supplements, vitamins, everything. They all dump, eat limited protein, drink little water, no exercise, and are at or near goal weight. I'm glad they have had great success with their surgery and wonder what made mine so different.
Anyway, I am looking at a revision. Vanderbilt does not do revisions. Dr. Husted is not in my insurance network. Has anybody had a revision with Drs. Houston or Olsen at Centennial Hospital in Nashville? What type of revision did you have and what results have you experienced?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I know a few folks on the board who had Dr. Torquati. I have heard good things about him.
While I did not have Dr. Houston or Olsen for a revision, I did have Dr. Houston for my RNY. I like him. But if I had not chosen him, I was going to Dr. Olsen. He is very knowledgeable and helped me when I needed him late in the night/early in the morning hours (2:30 am) when I had my gallbladder attack. There are some excellent doctors in the area at every hospital, too many to name! I hope you are able to find someone who does the revision surgery that you feel comfortable and happy with... please keep us posted.
Are you going to have the surgery where they go in and close up the stoma a bit?
I had a revision, but not from a RNY. I had a REALLY old gastric stapling, kind of like today's vertical banded gastroplasty, but not nearly as secure or well done. Any way, I never did lose more than 30 pounds. So I started looking for surgeons last year. I went to several in the Knoxville area and no one wanted to do it. I contacted Dr Husted and he was willing to do it but wanted me to go to San Francisco to have it and I just couldn't afford the added expense. Dr Bolar in Clarksville had done many revisions, so I ended up going to him and had an open RNY. I have done well with pretty much no complications. The hospital up there, Gateway Medical is now a Bariatric Center of Excellence.

Thanks for all of the replies. I called Dr. Houston's office yesterday. He is not taking new patients. I then spoke with Dr. Olsen's office. I have a consult scheduled next Thursday.
Just from my reading, I'm thinking either an extended RNY or a DS. With the ERNY I might actually dump, which I have never done with the RNY. It would be a much safer surgery as well. I have to find out what he could do for the enlarged stoma. I haven't read about many long term positive outcomes of stomaphyx or the ROSE procedure. The DS appeals to me for several reasons. The long term success of the DS is higher than the other surgeries. I have Rheumatoid Arhtritis, with the RNY I can't take NSAIDS but could with the DS. However, the DS revision would be a risky surgery.
I appreciate your replies.
