I am so sorry things are not working out easily.  My sugeon said the RNY and the lapband were about the same price.  My RNY was $20,000, and I added $10,000 because I had an IVC filter placed beforehand.  My insurance didn't pay a penny.  I borrowed and took what little I had in savings.  Is it possible for you to borrow from one of the healthcare lenders?  I used http://www.capitalonehealthcarefinance.com/ Or, have you looked into the Blis program?  It is kind of like insurance for WLS.  You can search http://www.bliscompany.com/.  Above all, don't give up!  It is work trying to find ways to get this surgery done, but at the same time, it really gives you time to learn about it and really decide if it is the right thing for you.

The RNY is about the same price as the lapband. Also, you need to ask the office exactly how much you will be responsible for. The $25,000 is the estimated cost for self-pay patients. However, since your insurance will pay half, you will get a big credit. Usually, the hospital has certain rates set up for certain insurance companies and they have to only charge what that rate is. It is usually a significant decrease. So, they will have to decrease the amount, then insurance will pay half and you will be responsible for half. I would check with your surgeons office and/or insurance company to get an estimated amount. It may be quite a bit less than you think.
Don't give up. There are still ways. Just keep researching and checking into it.

Mike had his surgery at Centennial two years ago.  He was self pay for the entire thing, RNY.  Some doctors in Nashville will not perform an RNY but will do lapband if you are self pay.  The last word I heard, Centennial and Baptist was around $15K for lapband.  Anyway, Mike paid $25K for his RNY surgery.  And, Centennial at the time had this deal where if you had any complications as a result of the RNY, they would give you a 40% discount.  Many insurances will not pay for complications if you go ahead and pay for the wls yourself and its a noncovered benefit.

I am sorry to hear that you are having so many problems.  It surely is worth investigating and maybe finding someone who will work with your insurance and yet give you a better price.  Check around at the Centers of Excellence and surgeons that are highly recommended...  don't pick a fly by nighter just cause he is cheap, for sure, but I would choose among the best and then get their rates and ask for any discounts that might be applicable.  Good luck.

And also, something that came to my mind as I read your post this morning.  I know you are discouraged right now.  Hey, back in my pre wls days, I would have already resorted to the biggest hot fudge cake I could find on the face of the earth, buried my face in it...  kinda like "a tear in my beer" sob story only a tear in my hot fudge cake...

But hon you have come too far and worked really hard.  Please, if you are wanting to return to food, don't do it.  It's not worth it.  Maybe you don't have those thoughts, but I know and remember how I did...  We are here for you...  I wish you the best and please keep us posted.

I'm glad to hear that Sindee, that you are watching your health.  That is so important.  If you need to vent or cry, feel free to do so.  It is terribly disheartening to go through these road blocks...

sindee i feel your pain i dont even have an insurance company to pay half i have to do all of it myself and its sad that the self pay price is much higher than if you had insurance. my choice of surgery will be the rny and my surgeon of choice sent me a packet with the cost of 25k so far from what i can tell they are all averaging the same cost.  dont give up i dont have 25k but i will be blessed with it some how.  i just have to i dont want to spend the rest of my life being over weight cant breath, high blood and diabetic oh and along with the side affects from lupus.  so hang on in there we are on this road together.
