Just got letter from ins carrier approving surgery. After 24 months of thought, six months of jumping through hoops and three months of Dr visits it's almost close enough to see. Is the pre-op liquid diet tough? My dietician said I would be on fluids for 7 days prior to surgical date to shrink my liver.  How long does the liquid stage last? About what is the length of each stage?  Thanks.

Congrates!!

I had a two week pro-op diet.  The first week was 2 protein drinks (shakes, carnational instant breakfast, etc) and one frozen entree for either dinner or lunch not to exceed 300-400 calories.  The 2nd week consisted of 4 protein drinks a day.

I would have to say that the first week was the roughest.  For me it was about a month from the last time the I saw Dr Lynch and surgery and did the "week 1" portion.

The day before surgery for me was clear fluids.

Do you know if you will be on only clear fluids (broth and jello, etc) or protein drinks.  If protein you should be ok.

Just use water to fill up your stomach.

One final piece of advice:  DO NOT CHEAT!!!

This final week is very important in order to shrink your liver to make it safe and easier for your doctor.  Last thing that you want is the liver to break, or cause any problems during surgery.

I have even heard stories that the surgen stopped surgery because the liver was too big.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I had a liquid diet one week before surgery. For me and my body weight it was 6 carnations per day and eight cups of iiquid in between.
(I forgot also that I had a two week liquid diet in the very beginning according to body weight it was 8 carnations a day back then..and 8 cups of liquid--that was at 280 weight)

I had buy lots of jello, different flavored broths (I enjoyed the tomatoe broth cubes by Knorr--I bought this at Food Lion in the Hispanic section) , sugarfree popcycles, and the carnation  website has a place to order a box of variety sugarfree carnation instant.

Yes the liquid part is difficult.
... Maybe TMI but I will admit that I took a bite of a few things and then just spit it out occasionaly during that week.

You have to keep your goal in mind though.
Remember it  is much easier With the pouch and thats what you are working towards.

My surgeons visited me several times while I was in the hospital and made it a point to tell me several times how much they enjoyed the surgery because everthing was great inside so they could concentrate on the connections, it also cut their time down by 1 and 1/2 hours!

I was glad to hear afterwards how confident they were with their work because I did my part.
