Stressed mothers may raise fat children: study

http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20080902/NEWS-M OTHERS-CHILDREN-DC/

I just read this article and wondered what ya'll thought about this in relationship to your own weight gain and that of children.  For me personally, I was a stressed child, as was my brother. And I am a stressed adult.  Dave and I were both heavy as children and I have a heavy child.  Do you think that the "Solutions" given in the article could help with childhood obesity?   What are your thoughts about this weighty issue?   Please leave a message and I will respond later tonight after football (another stressful issue!)  Have a great day!

Hi hon, I am a mom of two, as you know Ash as fought her weight most of her life as well as steve.  WE love them so, but , never want them to have to endure the  rude, critictism that we've had to deal with as I we've have grown up. They did more so up in northern states, not as much in the southern states, such as bama. Wonder why that is?  Is it thought as more exceptable in the deep south, or is the children more disciplined in that area. I just don't get it. When we move here and In. both of the children got the same response, igornance as I call it. I would alway tell the kids, "what they do and say will come back on them.".  I call it the "Thin Mentallity that have no clue!!!!" As Stacy would say "BITE ME" HEHE  As for a solution,  I think as we know as WL patient, change our way of cooking and prep work, that everyone would get on board,!!!!! It is like a new revelution, and BETH IS STARTING IT,YOU GO GIRL!!!!Seek Codes

I was raised in a very stressful household but was not overweight until I was an adult.  None of my siblings were ever very overweight.  My brother Jack could stand to lose 30 pounds, but that is it. So was my weight gain a delayed reaction maybe? My children were never overweight as children.  Matt was never overweight in his life, Erin is about 25 pounds overweight now, at 27.  I think both of my children looked at me and didn't want to be like me.  But, I have a friend who is overweight and her husband is morbidly obese and so are both of their kids, both less than 10.  I think childhood obesity has more to do with the parents eating habits and exercise habits than anything else.  Even though I was obese, my husband until 5 years ago was skinny as a rail.  We kept out kids in active sports all the way until college, but I never really watched their diets.  They did that on their on, I guess.  I don't know if I have a good answer for this one?

Hi Beth, a couple friends of mine both had the gastric bypass.  Both of their children are majorly obese.  Their daughter who is 7 is already wearing women's size clothes.  She's bigger then all her friends.  Son who is 14 and on the football team, can wear his dad's shirts before he had the gastric bypass.  But neither parent is doing anything to help their children live a healthier life style.  It's fastfood, sodas in the home at all times.  They know what the children are becoming, and know they are getting rude comments made of them, but they don't do anything to help them.  They very seldom fix healthy foods, it's usually take outs, pizza and mountain dew, or grab something and bring it home.  The parents don't work out, and are gaining the weight back on.  I feel for the kids though.

We lead by example.  By cooking healthy foods, our children will learn what they can eat, and what they can't eat.  My older son and his lovely wife don't cook a lot of carbs, mostly meat and veggies.  My 3 yr old grandson will eat chicken, then his veggies, with just a little water at meal times.  He doesn't want sweet drinks, he'll ask for water or apple juice.  Where my 6 yr old grandson is already over weight as his mom let's him eat anything he wants and if he doesn't like something, he throws it on the floor and she allows it.  He always wants sodas or sweet drinks and jus****ches TV all day when not in school.  I have noticed that my younger grandson is far more polite and the older one is rude to everyone.  I think a lot of the additudes comes from what we eat.  I know when I was obese I hated the world, but now I find something to be thankful for and willing to go the distance for someone even if it means I do without.

Have a great week,
love ya

My hx is a lot like Marilyn's.  When I was growing up we couldn't afford to overeat.Things changed for me with my first pregnancy.  I think the article has some validity, but as usual, things aren't exactly black and white in real life.  But I do think tallking about it and becoming more educacted helps, especially with our kids.

Thanks to all *****plied.  I thought it was a good article and raised some questions, but like it was said, it ain't all that's there!  As a morbidly obese person and the parent of one who is one, I think there needs to be a lot done to combat this problem, which leads to .... the walk from obesity!   Ya'll knew I was leading somewhere, didn't you?   LOL  Anyway, it was food for thought and provocation.   Have a wonderfula nd Blessed evening!

This was an interesting article...and very thought provoking too...  Thanks for sharing Beth..

What does it mean that children are stressed?  I understand that the parents are stressed...  But I don't think I understand the children being stressed...

My brother and I talk about this often that when we were growing up we did not know that we didn't have.   We were raised by a single mom that held 3 jobs...  I was the oldest....  My mom did everything she could to make sure we had...  We did not know that we didn't...

My obesity trend did not start until my college years and on into early adulthood... I guess you can say when I was left to my own devices... LOL....  I made bad food choices and had it in abundance....  It was the late 70's early 80's .....  I was on my own... Microwaves had become affordable for everyone and Mc Donald's had begun to show up on every street corner....  This was new to me and talk about comfort...  Oh yea...

I have obesity genetics on both sides of my family and the diabetic link too... this was a train wreck waiting to happen....

Looking back now after all these years I do have regrets with my own children that are now grown....  I wish that I had never introduced them to carbonated beverages, I wish that I had never introduced them to white processed sugar... I thought I was being the hip mom by throwing the biggest Birthday Party at Burger King with all the best cupcakes decorated in the best Barbie sugar laden pink icing you had ever seen......  I did not need to do that...  All they needed was their mother, and my love and attention and protection... not pink icing.....
