Steroids

I had a minor complication with my anterior spinal fusion causing me to temporarily lose my voice and only be able to swallow liquids.  In the hospital they gave me IV steroids every 6 hours which really helped with both problems.  But since coming home on Saturday, I have been on a lower dose of PO steroids.  I noticed yesterday that my voice was getting tight again and now I am back to swallowing just liquids again.  Today I have almost no voice at all.  It is a common complication with this type surgery and will eventually go away, so I am not worried that they did anything wrong. I have put a call into the surgeon to see if I need to increase the steroids, but at the same time I am hesitant.  They make me STARVE!  I have managed to lost a pound since surgery and am worried that if I continue on the steroids I will start to gain, not just from eating/drinking more but from fluid retention that comes with chronic steroid usage.  Ron wants me to not worry about weight loss right now, saying I can catch up after I heal.  He said this morning he didn't care if I lost another pound until I was healed, but I don't want to start something bad.  I don't want to sabatage what I have already accomplished.  Anybody take steroids since surgery and how did you handle them?

I understand not wanting to flirt with the demon! But Ron's right and you know it will be the steroids causing the puffy water retention. Once it subsides the water and puffiness will go in the mean time make sure you only have the healthy things to eat around you. Keep a positive outlook don't let depression get a foothold. Just remember you'll be able to accomplish so much more pain free, so for now walk & pee, walk & pee!

I agree with Ron...  you need the medication to get better.  But I also understand your concern.  While I have not had any types of steroid since wls, I did take them a number of years back.  Wow, I felt like I could eat the side off a house! And that was just for an appetizer!  I hope and pray that you are able to come off the pills very soon, and that you will find ways of diverting your attention when the starvation comes calling your name.  Keep us posted...

Have you checked with your WLS surgeon about the use of oral steroids?

If he gives the okay to use them then I agree that you just worry about healing from the spinal surgery and deal with the weight loss afterwards. You know that the steroid weight gain is going to go away once you stop taking them.

As for the liquids, sounds like you need to just go on liquid protein supplements and other fluids. That will get your nutrition in and your fluids. The rest can be dealt with after you heal.

Talked to both surgeons today.  Dr Bolar's office said take whatever I need to and make sure I get in at least 100 grams of protein a day throughout healing.  Neurosurgeon's office doesn't want to increase the steroids and still wants me to stop them tomorrow.  Apparently too many steroids will hinder the "take" of the bone graft.  I am going to go have an xray done to make sure everything is ok next week, but they think time will take care of everything and to not ******vous nelly.  They also said to take the pain meds and valium too!  So, I'm going to take my drugs and not worry about anything!!!LOL.
