Big Step
I took the plunge yesterday and joined a fitness center. I toured several in the area and finally chose one that actually made me feel EXCITED about exercising. That in itself was a miracle. They emphasized that my program will start slow then slowly build on itself as I grow in fitness. Plus I get more than one session with a trainer, something that was very important to me. It's been years since I exercised and I was a little hesitant about going it alone until I felt comfortable with the equipment. I don't expect miracles, regardless of what the salesperson said, but it sure would be nice to have better mobility and some of my flexibility back. ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/regular_smile.gif)

Hi Marilyn
Thank you for your reply. The Rush wasn't my first choice in gyms but it was the only one willing to work with me with regard to what I could pay. I didn't know what to expect when I started going. Alot of beauty queens and body builders in spandex, I suppose. But so far everyone has been really nice and encourarging. It's very hard work given that I'm so very out of shape and riddled with arthritis, but the crew there is wonderfully encouraging. I think I'm going to do well.

Hi Barb
Thank you for your encouraging words! They have a pool but it is small. They've started me out very slow doing mostly stretching exercises and an elliptical machine (which I can't go five minutes on...yet!). They're easing me into my workouts so I don't get overwhelmed and, in my trainers words, frighten me away. They also make sure I don't push to the point of pain. Pain, they say, is not a good thing, and I agree. My trainer is actually in college to be a physical therapist which I consider a big plus in my favor.

That is a big step. But a step in the right direction. Good for you!
You are going to be surprised at how enjoyable exercise can actually be as you get smaller, and smaller, and smaller... LOL

Hi Susan
I remember when I was younger how much I enjoyed being active. I was never skinny, always chubby, but until I reached my 30's I was never so large my body couldn't respond the way I wanted it to. Then arthritis set into my knees and I gave into it until I sacrificed my mobility in the name of pain. I hope you're right and that I will once again be able to enjoy being active as I get smaller and the pain eases from my knees. I appreciate your encouraging words. Hope you're enjoying a good weekend!

Congrats to ya! Exercise is a huge part of any weight loss journey. Coupled with proper eating habits and nutrition, it is THE key, in my opinion. One suggestion I have is to keep a daily exercise journal, just as you should keep a daily food journal. It will allow you to see where you are, how much you improve, and where you need to add additional attention.
Don't try to do it overnight - just take it at a good pace and be steady and focused, and you will definitely see results!
