Out of Pocket

renee6942, just reminded me that I have never had the "out of pocket" discussion with my surgeon's office.

Normally the day you meet with you surgeon you meet with the insurance specialist to get your date and talk about your out of the pocket expense.  Except I didn't get my date that day (because he wanted a sleep study) and when she called me with my date I never thought about the $$$.

Now 3 weeks pre-op I have no idea what (or when) they expect me to pay.  And of course I have this revelation on a Saturday morning when I can't do anything about it till Monday.

Good, I needed something to worry about!

My entire surgery was out of pocket and I had to pay for it the day of the surgery at the hospital and the day before at the doctor's office because I was the first patient of the day and they wouldn't be opened up yet.

If your insurance is covering your surgery, you will normally pay your part after they submit it to insurance. Trust me, if they want payment from you up front, they will let you know. When I had my WLS it was out-of-network. I had to pay my portion before they would schedule my date. Of course, that was under different management and very different rules. They weren't "in-network" for any insurance carrier back then. I was self-pay for my plastics. I had to have everything paid 1 week prior to my surgery date.

You are right, they will be me after insurance pays.  I was worried because my knee I had to pay 10% up front the day of the surgery.

Thanks!

Thanks, I got it taken care of first thing this morning.  I always have these panics on weekends because I have to give myself extra worry.
