RNY, Pregnancy, and the Glucose Test???

I know it's been a real long time since Ive posted here. However, you guys have always been great for advice. I am currently 7wks 5d pregnant and was wondering about how RNY will affect the glucose test. I know there is a RNY/pregnancy board but Id like to get some local input ;) I can't eat most things that are real sweet. My heart rate starts to race, I get dizzy and then sick. I can't imagine what 50g of glucose going in at once will do to me. Not to mention I wonder how accurate the test really would be. Thanks so much for your help. Dixie

Hi Dixie,   Do you have a WLS-friendly ob/gyn?  Mine was very familiar with wls and had treated several patients.  He didn't have me do the glucose test.  All he did was follow my hemoglobin A1C level for about three times.  It's just a blood test and as long as there is no significant change during that time, then all should be well.  I wasn't particularly sugar intolerant until my pregnancy, but got pretty sensitive during.  Hopefully, your doc will understand and be knowledgeable about your situation.  Congrats and Good Luck!  ~~Elena

My OB hasn't had any experience in her practice with someone that has had RNY. Ive called several OB's in the area and none of them have. However, my OB is very open to me letting her know what I need to do or what is reccomended. I have my 8wk appt on the 9th and she said we would discuss everything about the pregnancy. I figured Id go in with all my information so I could inform her. Thanks for all the suggestions :) and well wishes.

You don't have to do the Glucose test. They have other methods. I chose the 2-hour perinial (sp?) test. I think that is the normal method if you don't do the glucose test. Basically, you have to go in that morning fasting and get your blood drawn. Then you go eat a big breakfast (perferably with some carbs or fruit) and then go back 2 hours after eating to get your blood drawn again. I did that test a couple of times throughout my pregnancy and all was good. But you don't have to do the normal glucose test so just make sure they know up front you aren't doing it so they can give you all the options. Plus, I don't think ti would be accurate the way we digest. I know some people who chose to test their own sugar at home like 5 times a day every day for a week and give those results to the Dr. Some Drs will just take an A1c or whatever to see how your sugar is doing. There are lots of different methods.  Congrats on your pregnancy. Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!
