I love Dr. Spaw!!! He did my surgery and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I had my psych eval with Dr. O'Bryan but I've met Charles from Athena and he's a very "comfortable to talk to" guy. The eval is just like everyone has told you. No big deal. They basically want to make sure you don't have any untreated, underlying issues like bulimia, anorexia, drug addiction, alcoholism, etc; and that you understand the risks, limitations and reality of the surgery. Good luck! Let us know how your process is going and when you get a date. If you haven't already, I'd also like to invite you to join our support group at MSC. We meet the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 in the waiting room of the surgery center. We currently have 3 or 4 guys attending so it's not all women. This is open to pre-ops as well as post-ops. I had mine there in Sept!!! You talk to the Psych. for a while; history, what do you want from weight loss, what do you know about the surgery you want (eating habits changes, protein first, then water 30 minutes later, drinking water all day, chewwing slow etc;are you aware of depression with surgey, are you going to get help with depression if it arises)how much fast food do you eat now, what % of fat ,of carbs, of sweets;what kind of eater are you ie grazer,3 meals a day with no cheating, how much soda you drink. Then you take some tests, IQ , eating disorder test, what I like to call an "Are you Crazy" test, you know..are others out to get you, is eveyone evil,do you hear voices etc...I felt very comfortable during all of it...BASICALLY you will "pass" as long as you are not bulimic, are not "Psycho", have a clear understanding of what changes are required, and have no underlying eating disorders!!!

i had mine with them. i wish my profile was up, i think i wrote all about it. basicly they just talk to you about your eating habits, past diets, and knowledge about the surgery. then you will take your basic paper tests, to determine your personality and that you are mentally stable. nothing big and nothing to get really worked up about!!! make sure you allow yourself about 2 hours for this appt. because the paper stuff could take a while.

Mine was with the Frye group in Nashville, but I think they use basically the same format. Several tests with hundreds upon hundreds of dots to pencil in and then a short interview basically. Good luck!!!
