Opinions please!!
Okay so I LOVE my surgeon and all of his staff & thank god for all of them, but last Friday I was feeling bad agin, like I did before I was readmitted back to the hospital for the dehydration, but I know I am not dehydrated because I can actually drink ALL of my fluids and then some now.(80 + ounces!) Well I went to the health food store and asked if they sold anything for GBS pt's. and he was telling me all the things that they have that other GBS pt's come in for, well after telling himthat I cannot have many things and I haven't been eating because I am sick of tuna, chicken & turkey. He then said well that is strange because like a car needs oils, & fluids your body needs things like whole wheat grains and stuff.(which I never even thought of)
Well now it seems like no matter what I eat that you can buy at the store I get sick from, but I bought some organic & gluten free foods ate them & I have been fine, have NOT been sick yet from the foods from the health food store.
Well now there are many people telling me that I need to get a second opioion from other dieticians(sp?) on things that I should be able to eat. (BTW, the lady that works at the health food store went to school to become a dietician(sp?) and she said they never even TOUCHED on organic foods and that at this point in time there aren't many studies done w/ organic foods therefore, many dr's. will tell you to say away from them because they don't know much about them)
My ? is should I stick with the organic foods that do not make me sick and give me the energy that I need to function during the day and take care of my kids or stay on the VERY strict diet that I am suppossed to be on that I can't even stomach anymore? HELP????!!!???
Hi Kim, I would think organic foods wouldn't hurt you. I can only eat Hydroponic Tomatoes that are organic grown, without all the pesticides, and no acid. I would check with your surgeon, and your nutrionist. They may be able to help you out there. I know I can't stand the smell of tuna or eggs and I'm almost 8 months out, makes me sick literly to my stomach. Have you tried fat free refried beans? High in protein, no fat. Add some cheese to it and eat it that way, or lowfat cottage cheese? I congradulate you on being able to get in all your fluids plus some. That's something I still can't get in.
I don't know what else to tell you, scrambled egg with cheese or add cottage cheese like an omelet. Try and stick to some soft foods, including soups for a few days and see how you are feeling, you don't want to rush things with the food, you haven't been that far out. How about shrimp? Does that affect you? I mostly eat shrimp, chicken, and was able to eat one turkey sausage last night with an eggo waffle with just sf syrup. Didn't eat all the waffle but it all stayed down. Which was a first for me. It will take time, and I promise as soon as I find my cookbooks that are still packed away, I will send some great chicken recipes. Now remember, you can't have beef or pork for a while, I don't even miss it. I use ground up chicken to substitute beef. Tastes like beef, and better then ground up turkey. I can only find mine at Krogers which is a drive for me. So when I am in Knoxville I stock up on at least 4-5 packages. Then if I just want a burger, I have the ground up chicken.
I wish you the best. Btw, my cookbook is 101 ways to cook chicken. You're in my prayers. Love Kathy
Kim Poole,
I think if it makes you feel better and healthier then it could not be all that bad. Plus like everyone says your food tastes change and so does your body. You could be one of those poelpe who should have been gluten free for years and not know it. It might just be your body telling you that need more. But to make sure that you are doing everything right and good for your body talk to your WLS Doctor and the dietician too. Make them do a blood test for you too so they /you can see if the new organic and gluten free foods are giving your body what it needs. Now in days plenty of people are on those special kinds of diets and the doctor/ dieticians are more informative on such areas in food now. I think you should play it safe and careful and contact your WLS Doctor and dietician. I do think it is great that you found food that does not make you sick.
Your friend,
Tina
