Nauseous - Is it a mind thing?

Hi Everyone. I had surgery on 6/22. I am about 7 weeks out. I actually have not had any complications and I am really excited about that. I have lost 48 pounds. I was able to eat somewhat regular foods starting 2 weeks ago. Everything has been fine until this week. For some reason, during this week I have become nauseous with eating and drinking. I am lucky if I get in 8 oz of food for the entire day (and lately that has just been yogurt). I have drastically cut my water intake from 64 oz to maybe 48 oz also because of nausea. Do you think this could be a mind thing? I don't want to eat and have no desire to eat but I never had problems eating and forcing myself to eat before now. When I try to eat this week, I get nauseous and sometimes, I have even spit the food out because it tastes so nasty and made me gag. Food doesn't taste good and feeling nauseous all of the time has caused me not to want to eat or even force myself to eat. I have not actually thrown up. I almost feel anorexic. I am really worried because it has been about 3-4 days now that I have not been able to eat or drink well. I am feeling weak. Has anyone else had this problem when you were doing fine with food and then all of a sudden food doesn't taste good and you stop eating and you become nauseous when you try to eat? Even the smell of food is nasty. Any advise on what to do? I think it is more mental than medical - or at least I am hoping so. It is just REALLY strange. Thanks! Misty

Hi Misty. I am just 4 weeks out but I was experiencing the same thing. I kept calling the dr about it.It got to the point I couldn't stand anything, the smell, the sight, etc. Water tasted like metal to me. The staff go worried about my intake and had me come in twice. It turned out that I had a stricture. They had to do an x-ray and use the scope to find it out. A balloon was used to open it up. I thought it was my imagination too, I was kind of glad I had something wrong with me. If you are not getting your required water and protein you MUST call your dr. I have been told it is very easy for us to get dehydrated and malnourished very quickly. 4 days is a long time. Call your dr. ASAP. Better safe than sorry.

Misty, honey, you know what I have been thru, and yes I have been dehydrated several times and hospitalized because of it. I too had to have the scope taken down my throat twice because of not being able to even handle water. I also found I can't drink water from the tap or even if the tap water is in the fridge, I have to drink bottled spring water only. Don't wait, see a Dr. or go to the ER, you don't want to wait when you are dehydrated, that causes more problems then you want, like death. Get help now. It's not a mind thing, it is real and some of us know just what you are going thru. Get help now. Don't sit back and think it's just mental. If you are getting weak, you need to get to the hospital. Love ya, Kathy
