Carnation Instant Breakfast??
Ok, let me start by saying that this is my opinion, and only my opinion and anyone who wishes to disagree may do so but you asked, so I am telling you -- CIB is not worth the wasted calories.
In the pre-mixed can, you get 150 calories per serving but only 9 grams of protein but with -- get this -- 5 grams of fat and 12 grams of sugar. This is the Carb Conscious one. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not a fat or sugar nazi, BUT I always look at ratios to determine whether or not something is worth eating -- anytime there are more carbs than protein in a food, I avoid it. Your ratios here are as follows:
calories from protein = 36
calories from sugars = 48
calories from fat = 45
I am sure you would agree that this is not a good choice. Now, many people use the powder and mix it with milk and add powdered milk. I won't list the nutritional information for that, but you can imagine the protein is not much higher (milk only has 1 gram of protein per oz) and the ratios stay about the same.
I say if you absolutely positively refuse to drink anything else, then at least you're getting *some* protein in, but there are better (and better tasting) options. I personally use the IsoFruit Delite protein in cantaloupe flavor. It mixes completely with water and tastes just like fresh cantaloupe. I get 21 grams of protein per 100 calories and enjoy drinking it. The company offers bariatric patients a 20% discount and free shipping (I always talk to Alina ext 109) if you order directly from them (1-888-scitec7). This company also has a very yummy line of protein that mixes better with milk and has chunks of real fruit or chocolate or coconut called Protein Delite. Some people really like the Nectar brand of protein too -- I didn't care for it, but my daughter loved their Cappuchino and Matrix Chocolate. With so many better options, I really hope you can find one that offers better nutritional values than the CIB.

revised my goal since I am a size 8/9 (some 6's) already and still need a panniculectomy!
Hi Melinda! I agree with JoAnna to a point. You can certainly find higher protein powders and shakes after surgery to take. Some will taste better too! The biggest thing is pre surgery and it is dependant upon your hospital and surgeon. I am going through Vanderbilt and with them for LAP, you are required to do 8 days of pre op Carnation Instant Breakfast powders on a liquid diet. No Ifs, ands, or buts about it. You have to have 6 a day (along with other liquids and that is it). But that is pre surgery only. After surgery, you can choose whatever protein powders and drinks you want. And trust me, after using the same kind for 8 days, changing and having variety is great! It will all be about your taste buds and what you like and don't like and what has the best protein. The CIB is just something my hospital requires pre surgery to make you loseweight and try to reduce your liver size and other reasons I just dont remember right now. I hope that helps.
