Hi Colleen.

No one has a support group in Saskatoon that I know of yet, but please search Saskatchewan Bariatric Support Group on Facebook and request to join. There may be a group of Saskatoon patients looking to connect. ?

Topic: RE: SBSG Resignation
Hello Board Members and Friends.   It is with deep regret that I must tender my resignation as President from the Saskatchewan Bariatric Support Group aka SBSG.   14 days ago, I was voted in as the newest Town Councillor for Redvers, which comes with another set of responsibilities, meetings, and committees.   Aside from that, I now live in Redvers, Saskatchewan, which is a 550 km round trip from every Board Meeting and every Support Group Meeting and every Wellness Activity, all which are currently booked on different days of the month.   I have realized that my role as President is becoming a emotional and financial strain, of which I am not able to maintain and that it would be unfair to the Group if I remained President and not able to provide more attention.   I know that you, the Board, are amazing people and this Board has never been in a better position then now.   I will still help Tess and Crystal prepare and plan for our potential conference in May, if they would like, however, it will be planning remotely from here in Redvers.   Please understand that this is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. It breaks my heart to do it, but it's time for me to let the SBSG stand on it's own.   Thank you for respecting and understanding my decision. It was been an honour serving with you and giving a voice to the obese.

Hey everyone. We NEED your help.  Shocked

We just created a proposal for an Idea on a way to help Education about Bariatrics in North America. If you think it's a great idea, then please add a reminder for yourself to vote for it everyday, starting October 4th. This will help us secure funding for this Idea so we can educate Doctors, and Health Professionals.

What would your thoughts be on an Educational Conference for Doctors to learn about Obesity and Bariatrics?

Please give us your honest feedback.

There is a potential he may be doing that surgery, but funding needs to be allocated first. No time frame as to when or if this would occur. Dr. Pooler would love to be able to do the VSG, but he does not control the finances.

Straw Walker,

It sounds like Dr. Pooler would like to start doing it through the Bariatric Clinic as soon as he gets approval, so that means Province Funded.

I do believe to qualify for it, you would still need to go through the 6 month pre-op program, and I highly recommend it. It helped focus with me the reasons I was making the choice to be accountable and take action against my Obesity.

I hope this helps.

Hey Straw Walker!

It seems as of late, many of us tend to be lurkers on the forums...lol

I'm glad you took a step to make a difference with your Obesity. Many of us have and many are still scared.

Hey BillieF,

I myself had a RNY here in Regina through our Provincial Program. I've had amazing aftercare, as well as great support from the Multi-disciplinary Team.

As for what surgery is right for you, each person needs to decide why they are having WLS, what they expect out of the surgery. Those answers should help solidfy a choice for you.

Topic: RE: Saskatchewan's Bariatric Surgical Assessment Clinic

Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region provides Bariatric Surgical Assessment Clinic services in Regina.

As of September 1, 2009, the clinic will be operating out of a new location at 1731 College Avenue, Lower Level (located at the corner of College Avenue and Broad Street in Regina).

Until September 1, the Region will continue to see existing patients in temporary space at the Regina General Hospital until the new clinic is open.

Who is eligible to participate in the clinic?

The clinic is designed to assist in the care of those clients whose BMI (Body Mass Index) is between 40 and 60. In certain instances, clients with a BMI between 35 and 40 may be considered for treatment at the clinic, particularly if they have 2 or more additional conditions which are being managed, such as:
  • Cardiopulmonary problems
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Severe diabetes mellitus
  • Physical problems interfering with lifestyle

You must be between the ages of 18 and 60, must be a non-smoker and cannot be pregnant, lactating or become pregnant to be admitted to the clinic.

How does the clinic help you?
  1. You must first contact your family doctor to discuss your eligibility for this clinic.
  2. Your family doctor will assess your condition and, if he/she feels you may benefit from the surgery, he/she will refer you to the RQHR Bariatric Surgeon.
  3. You will be assessed by the RQHR Bariatric Surgeon and, if considered to be a good candidate for the surgery, you will then be referred to the Bariatric Surgery Assessment Clinic.
  4. At the clinic, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team of health specialists.
  5. To be considered a surgical candidate, it is mandatory that you:
    • remain in the program for a minimum of six months,
    • have attended all assessments, appointments and all three support group meetings, and
    • have maintained or lost weight.
  6. Your request for surgery will be reviewed by the team. If all criteria are met, you will be placed on a surgical wait list.
  7. The laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass will be the surgical procedure performed. Following your surgery, your length of stay in the hospital is expected to be four days.

All client assessments, group sessions and related treatments will be conducted and performed at the Bariatric Surgery Assessment Clinic located in Regina. All surgeries will be performed at the Regina General Hospital.

For more information about the Bariatric Surgical Assessment Program, please call the Region's Surgical Waitlist Enquiry Line at (306) 766-5241 or toll-free at 1-866-622-0222.

Well Ivy, the program is 6 months long, and you have bi-monthly meeting with a multi-disciplinary team of a Physiotherapist, Nutritionist, Psychologist, Exercise Therapist, The Surgeon (Dr. Kaban), and a Registered Nurse. The program is going to be starting in the fall, and Dr. Kaban, and the new surgeon (his name escapes me) will be seeing patients in September. Making the choice to go out of country is not an easy one. I hope you do what you need to do to get the help you need.

Hi Angela, and Ivy.

The good news is there is a Bariatric Surgeon in Saskatachewan. In fact, as of today, there are now 2 Bariatric Surgeons in Saskatchewan, both located in Regina. I believe that there will be a permanent program in Saskatchewan by the Fall of 2009. Very good news!

I was part of the Bariatric Pilot Project that Ivy mentioned, and I had my Roux-en-Y Surgery on June 22nd, 2009. I've since lost 45 lbs, and a total of 101 lbs since September 2008. Best choice of my life.

There is alot of great information on surgical options and out of country suregons on the website of the WLS Support Group I am President of: www.sbssg.ca.

Check it out, and feel free to e-mail me with any questions. [email protected]

To quote Ozzy Osbourne, of all people... "Mama, I'm comin' home!" The nephrologist (Kidney Doctor) was strongly encouraged by myself and his peers to send me home today  , and the surgeon simply needs to sign my discharge orders. I might be home in time to pick up my boys from day care, and surprise them. I miss them so much. My Family and I can't thank you enough for your prayers and healing thoughts through this whole 17 day ordeal. It's kept my spirits up to know you are all thinking of me. I need to stop crying now, so I don't wreck my BlackBerry, but again, from the bottom of my heart, Thank You...
