I am sure Shirley has told you wonderful things as well, I have met Shirley and know her story. If you have any questions at all, dont hesitate to email me personally. [email protected] Kris

Topic: Lap Band vs. Bypass
I am currently being seen by Dr. Davey at the Weight wise clinic in Edmonton for Bypass surgery since Sask, does not cover Lap Band. I have been investigating out of province/country lap band options. Lap Band has always been my #1 choice for a number of reasons although Bypass has some merits as well. Can you tell me why you chose Lap Band? It would help me make a decision. Tanya

Hi Kris, Who did your surgery and how did it go. I have recently talked to Shirley Bergman who had it done by Dr. Kuri and I am considering him. What challenges are you encountering now? Tanya

Hi Tanya, The biggest reason for out of country is the wait period in Canada, as well as the cost. I am in Sakatchewan and the lapband is not covered. I saw Dr Davey and he seems like a really nice guy. I have actually had surgery one month ago today. Everything went very well and I am on my way!!! I have lost 35 lbs so far. If you have any other questions...I would be happy to help you with them. Kris

Hi, I am seeing Dr. Davey in his edmonton clinic. I am curious why you are considering out of country surgery. You mentioned Dr. Davey; have you heard anything about him?

Topic: RE: Looking for Surgeon Closer to Home
Hi, I am seeing Dr. Davey in Edmonton at the Weight wise clinic at the Royal Alexander hospital. I waited one year to be seen, in march 2007 and now am going for my second appointment on June 4. I was told I could have my surgery as early as late summer or fall. I am in the process of looking into whether or not it is covered because itis done at a publically funded hospital not a private clinic. It is covered for all Alberta residents. The gastric bypass is covered by Sask Health but I have been arguing with them about Lap Band. Google Weight wise clinic in edmonton for a referral form for your family doc.

Hi Shirley, Thanks for the reply. I actually had surgery as well now. Where did you get your surgery done and who does your fills? Would love to hear your story and how you are doing with eating now. I am still on mushies now but have a hard time sticking to not eating regualr foods, and/or knowing the difference. Talk to you soon, Kris

Hi Rhonda, I had my surgery done with Dr. Kuri in Tijuana. There are a number of good doctors in Mexico but I believe that Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Kuri are considered the top two best surgeons. Anyone who has had surgery in Mexico will tell you that it is completely safe and that the hospital and facilities are BETTER than any here in Canada or the US. I would recommend that you join some bandster groups on Yahoo groups such as bandsters, canadianlapbanders, mexicanlapbanders and fully inform yourself. Dr. Kuri also has his own group on Yahoo groups which you can join if you are considering surgery with him. Dr. Kuri's website currently has a special of $7500 - he usually charges close to $9000. There are other doctors who charge $6500 - $7000 but some are not as reputable and given the slight price difference I chose to go with one of the best. However, most people will tell you that they were thrilled with their choice of doctors so research your options well. The main thing is to ensure that you have a doctor or RN near where you live to do your fills following surgery. Hope this helps. MC

I am researching different options for the Lap Band procedure. My husband is very concerned about going to Mexico for surgery. Could you tell me where you had your surgery done? And how safe did you feel? Thank you Rhonda [email protected]
