• Obesity-related illnesses cost the Saskatchewan health care system an estimated $120million dollars annually, or 7.3% of total direct health care costs in the province. When productivity losses due to obesity, including premature death, absenteeism and disability, are added, the total cost of obesity to the Saskatchewan economy is estimated at between $230 million and $260 million a year, equal to 1% of the province's Gross Domestic Product.
• Rates of overweight conferring a "probable health risk" (BMI = >27) have nearly doubled in Saskatchewan, with 35.3% of the province's adults now overweight compared to just 18.7% in 1985.

I can't tell you how much I look forward to the monthly meetings and now I'm so excited about the aquasize classes. It will be so much fun.
I really enjoyed listening to Dr. Hatfield and loved his presentation. It was very nice to hear that his clinic really puts a lot of emphasis on maintenance and treating everyone as an individual and preparing plans specifically for each persons needs. Very refreshing to say the least.

Hello all.
Things went swimmingly...lol
A little pun as we announced our Saskatchewan Bariatric Surgery Support Group Aquasize 2008.
We had Dr. Richard Hatfield of One Body, One Life attend as our Guest Speaker and discuss alternative and Non-Surgical Weight Loss Options. Many were intrigued by his candor and the way he made sense of all of the weight loss/diet programs out there and how they can help set you up to fail, in his opinion. If Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is not the right fit for you, try a free consultation with Dr. Hatfield. You might be surprised.
More information can be found at www.drhatfieldcentres.com.
A quick Health Update around the room to hear of any struggles and health concerns. This actually started a great After-Meeting Dialogue.
Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of our October Support Group Meeting.
Thank you,
Joel Sopp

The SBSSG Meetings are always open to Members and Non-Members alike. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! I myself am waiting to hear those words for Dr. Kaban as I am in the 6 month program. Please keep your eyes open for confirmation of our October Meeting. We'd love to have you!
Joel
Yes the meeting is open to everyone. Please come, you will be welcomed with open arms. I have not had surgery with Dr. Kaban but I do know there are a few of us who have had different surgeries in different places and I'm sure folks would be willing to help with your questions if they have the answers and if not maybe able to direct you to some answers. I'm still new as a post op patient. I had my surgery on July 13th of this year and I guess everyone's weigh comes off differently....also depending on the type of surgery you have.
Anyway, please come to the meeting..the more the merrier :)...oh and a huge CONGRATS on your weight loss so far, you are doing awesome!!!!!!
