The good news is there is a Bariatric Surgeon in Saskatachewan. In fact, as of today, there are now 2 Bariatric Surgeons in Saskatchewan, both located in Regina. I believe that there will be a permanent program in Saskatchewan by the Fall of 2009. Very good news!
I was part of the Bariatric Pilot Project that Ivy mentioned, and I had my Roux-en-Y Surgery on June 22nd, 2009. I've since lost 45 lbs, and a total of 101 lbs since September 2008. Best choice of my life.
There is alot of great information on surgical options and out of country suregons on the website of the WLS Support Group I am President of: www.sbssg.ca.
Check it out, and feel free to e-mail me with any questions. [email protected]

Hi Scott!
I'm not aware of anyplace specifically for teens, but the First Steps program at the Field House is excellent. They do nutrition and food sessions, plus supervised walking around the track. It was designed for older people who have had heart bypasses, but has spread to include people with arthritis, chronic diseases, etc. You would probably be the oldest person there, unfortunately. I know several people who've gone through it and they say it's excellent.
You would need a referral from a family doc, but you can also see a nutritionist for free. She would help you with diet plans, healthy eating, portion control etc. Some are really excellent, some I think got their license in a crackerjack box.
One thing you can do ifor free is get a copy of the Canadian Food Guide, and start eating according to that. (You may need to increase calories but try to stick to the types, eg 5-10 veggies a day) Also hit the library up for sensible books -I would strongly suggest you avoid fad diets though! Many of us old farts (I'm 10 years older than you :) have trouble losing weight on very strict diets because of constant fad dieting when younger.
Walking is free, too. Do you like swimming? If you're self conscious (I am!) you can walk in place at home.
hope that helps a bit and have a spiffy day
Ivy
Thanks for reading!

Hi Angela!
Which surgery are you looking into? I've been looking into VSG or DS and in all the provinces I've checked the wait is an average of 4 years. Are you on a waiting list with Dr Savoie? I would make *sure* NB Health will cover out of country surgery first! Sask doesn't. The US has much shorter waits but may require pre op testing beforehand. Mexico seems the fastest but I have no idea about insurance covering surgery there.
No bariatric surgeons in this province; there is a pilot program in Regina but it's full!
rough prices in the us
lap band 10-15k
VSG about the same
DS 20k (one surgeon) to 26k, 35k
Mexico
lap band 6-7k
vsg about the same
ds 15k (one surgeon in spain does it for about 16k also)

Ivy (probably gonna get operated on in the states or mexico myself)
Hi
I am currently on 2 lists for WLS in New Brunsick. My family doctor has recommended that I outsource surgery wait times in other provinces, the US or even Mexico. This really scares me but my BMI is around 72. If you can give me an idea of how long of a wait it is in other provinces etxc I would really appreciate it. I called Medicare in NB and they advised that they will pay for surgery in another province except Quebec but I need to find a doctor, then have my family doctor and the surgeon write a letter to the NB Medicare board to ensure payment would be made. I'm lost at where to start so I thought I know...the great groups on OH can help. I'm even considering going self pay if necessary
Thanks
Angela
