Straw Walker,
Did you have to get a referal from your Dr. before getting into the 6 month program or did you just call the clinic directly? I have called there to inquire about self pay lap banding and they were really great to talk to. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sleepless,  Firstly I have to apologize for such a long wait till I posted but I was tripping over the countryside.  I did have to get a referral from my doc and it took almost two years.  Actually it could have been more but I just simply lost track of time.  At that time the clinic only did RNY so after doing some research, I also asked my doc to refer me to the Alberta Weight Wise Clinic as they do the VSG.  While on thier list, I finally got my call from the Sask bariatric.  Then to my absolute delight, I found out that they are just starting to do the VSG.  I am so excited I can not even tell a person how excited I am about that.
If you are at all considering the lapband, you should maybe research the VSG.  From my research the lapband is associated with a raft of problems.  I actually had a surgeon in Sask tell me that he would never do that surgery cause he felt it was morally wrong to do so with what he knows about it.  The VSG however has been getting stronger and more positive reviews as the data is coming in about it.  Always best to do your own research though and see what is best for you personally in your own cir****tance.
Do you have a docs referral by chance?
Take care.

Hi Everyone,
I am from small town Saskatchewan. Esterhazy to be exact. I was accepted in to the program in Regina through referral. It only took about six months for me to go. I guess I was the right specs. I just completed the six month program on June 23 and am now waiting for a surgery date. They say that it could happen as soon as September. I am so scared and excited all at the same time. This forum is a wealthof information. I am very grateful to have the information available to me.

OH Wanda....welcome. So good to 'see' another Sask. face!  How did you get in so fast girl?  You know someone at the top or what?  *smiles*  You are at a very exciting time in your journey I bet.  I am so happy for you as soon you will be on the losers bench.  Someday I will too.  What was the six months in the clinic like for you?  Could you tell me all about it if you dont mind?
In the meantime,
Take Care.

Thanks Straw Walker
It is very exciting.
The program in my opinion was very hard for me. Not because things were tough or anything like that but because there were a lot of things that I had to look into my own life about. You meet with the team every two months, have to keep records of your caloric intake for all six months (this sure makes you look at what you are eating). Meating with the therapist helped me, as it help me focus on why I wanted to do this. Like I said, it was not easy, I left there more than once in tears, not because they were mean or anything but because I am hard on myself and had to look at a few things I was doing in my life that were not good for me. Things were very eyeopening.
As far as getting in so soon, I am not sure why. It all happened pretty fast that is for sure. I am very grateful though that it did. I believe everything happens for a reason and I am pretty sure this happened at the right time.
I will definately keep you all posted on when I get my date. Looking forward to being on that loosers bench but I am a very impatient person and want it to happen now. LOL.

OMG......I am so glad I read this forum this morning........I have been waiting to hear if SK was going to do the VSG surgery here.....and you guys have given me some hope.....I am sitting here crying knowing that I might actually be able to get that surgery.....I am at the point where walking is quite difficult due to arthritis in BOTH my knees....I can maybe stand for 10 minutes at a time before I have to sit again, which is making it difficult for me to work or find a job at all.....no one wants to hire me....

I know I need this procedure as my BMI is huge....over 55....I am only 5'4"......I am just concerned about the 6 month pre-op program as I am not sure how much longer my legs will hold out and I don't want to be in a wheelchair......I also have PCOS, Can't exercise.......and have not been able to lose any weight over the past 10 years.........I don't want anything to delay the possibility of getting the surgery.

I am going to the doctor next week and asking for him to refer me to the Regina program and hoping that they are doing the VSG surgery

any information about the pre-op program would be really great and thanks so much for the information........

 Hey Vanessa,

High five girl.  The VSG just tickled me pink too.  It really is the best news I had heard in a long time, not only for me but I think for so many others as well.  You should get that doc referral asap to get started on your journey.  Hopefully we will see each other on the losers bench someday.
Take care.

Hey Straw Walker.....well I went to see my doctor today and he said he would be sending the referral to the Bariatric Center in Regina right aways........I am so excited......he did say there was a 2 year wait which I am hoping is not the case as I am not sure if I can wait 2 more years for surgery.....I am not sure if my knees will hold me for another 6 months......so it should be interesting.....Please keep me informed of what happens with you as I will be excited to see your progress and will hopefully follow you on that progress very shortly.....

I can't wait.......!!!

Hey there Vanessa,

I may have great news.  There was one poster on here....maybe even on this thread who got in like 6 months or something like that.  She went in really quick so I am pretty sure that they prioritize according to co-morbidities, bmi, etc.  You may be in there like flint.  Good for you for getting the referral!  If you find the wait too long, there is always Mexico.  Sounds scary but there is quite a few who have gone with great sucess.  Billy F  posted on here about his VSG there.  He is doing awesome.  I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that he used Dr. Aceves for his procedure and is very happy with all of the process.  This option one has to pay for themselves out of pocket though, but beats a hell of a wait if you can do it.

I have my very first clinic date booked for August and I am very excited to go.  I am so ready for this part of the process to begin.  I was one of those that was on the waiting list 2 plus years....ack.  I will keep you posted and I will look forward to following your progress as well.

I am very happy for you as this is a big step you took.  Bravo!
Take care.

I am hoping that the co-mobidities I have and the fact that my arthritis in my knees are so bad that it is starting to interfere with my daily living will help along with a few other things that are happening will help push me up.....I wonder if my BMI being so high may do it as well.  I tried to get funding to go to Mexico for the surgery there, but unfortuntly I was not approved so when I saw this post and that SK was doing the surgery I figured I would wait as long as I needed to to get the surgery....hopefully before I have to sit in a wheelchair...............

I started a food journal yesterday.....and told my family that I am going to do what I need to do to get the surgery....they are behind me 100%......this has been a long time coming for me....I have been looking for an answer for 15 years.......and it will be nice to have others to talk to who are in a similar situation.........

I am so glad you have a clinic date for August......I am so ready as well for the process to begin......but the only surgery i am having is the VSG as I think it is far superior to the others....that and with being as big as I am I am not fond of being cut wide open on a table and having my organs rearranged.....small incisions around my belly I am totally okay with.......

I have a friend that went to Mexico in January......and she was about a size 24......she is now shopping in the regular stores and has lost over 60lbs....that is so awesome.........I am going to do whatever I have to do to make sure this surgery works....as I never want to have surgery again......LOL....unless it is to tuck a few things into place.....LOL

Vanessa
