Hi, I'm Ani..
I am in Alberta, but AB doesn't have a support group so I thought I would check this forum out.
Let me tell you what I am doing. I am going to Mexico, and paying for my surgery myself. I am having the VSG or gastric sleeve...you can check out the forum for tons of information...it is a good surgery for someone with a really high BMI.
The cost includes airfare, transportation, a 5* hotel, and all medical related charges... $10,000.
Please feel free to check out my doctor, and his credentials...you can also look him up in the search engine just click on OH first. His name is Dr Joya. He's in Puerto Vallarta.
It can be so frustrating not to get the help we need...up here in Canada they only offer either the RNY or LAPBAND...Neither of which were a choice for me. And make you jump through a thousand hoops to get surgery....Here in Alberta, there is a 4 year wait list.
Take care and I hope you find the help you need.
Ani
Hello Dion
I had lapband surgery 4 years ago in Tijuana, Mexico. I am an R.N. and I facilitate patients for surgery with my surgeon Dr. Lopez Corvala in Tijuana. He does all kinds of procedures for weight loss and has been for many years. He is the director of the Surgeon Training Center in Mexico. He will do the sleeve gastrectomy for $8500 including ground transportation, hospital, and hotels. There is also the balloon procedure that can be done to get your BMI lower and then have surgery. I am having an information seminar on April 13th in Saskatoon at 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the auditorium of the library at the Lakewood Civic Center at 1635 McKercher drive. Call me for more info:
Lorna King 306-373-1879 or 306-280-7313.
hi dion,
i would recommend ur doctor send a referral to dr farries in red deer alberta, he will do gastric bypass on big bmi. but he only takes referrals once yearly in may, see ur doctor asap to book ur referral for the first monday in may. once ur doctor office gets a hold of receptionist at dr farries office that first monday in may , they will give u a appointment date for ur first consult, my first consult date was oct/07 and i am having my surgery in may.
good luck julie

Hey Dion,
I know exactly what you are gogin through! on October 25, 2006 I weighed 525lbs and my height was 6'0" so that means a BMI of 69 !!!!!!!!!! and i was only 23 years old, I am now 400lbs so that is a bmi of 55 !!!!!!!!! I did exactly what you are doing right now wondering wondering if it was too late to help or if there was any magical drug to take or anything, but it had to start with my mind, my way of thinking about food, and more inportantly the way i thnk about myself! We can not use food to comfort us when we are sad or eat becasue we are bored, it would be like a meth addict saying it was ok to do it when they are sad or board, we have to admit to our selves that we have a problem adn that we have an addiction, thaty in my mind is more dangerous than any narcotic, simply because we are not going to jail for getting our fix, we just get looks and head shakes.
My first step was to admit to my self that "YES I HAVE A PROBLEM", the next step was to start getting out more, even if it is just to go for a short walk, next is diet, not a fad diet or drastically cutting out all foods, it was simple things like (for me this was a good thing) buying watermellon instead of chips, not drinking soda, it is true i still drink soda like coke 0 or pepsi max, and before everyone says thats no better, i would rather have some aspertaime than straight sugar, don;t look at it like it is the only drink, look at it as a treat.
Dion if ever wanna chat hit me back on here i will talk if u need man
good luck
