Topic: Does anyone have DakotaCare insurance?
Hello, I have DakotaCare and I'm a state employee. According to my insurance policy, I have to go through 12 months of their weight management program before they will approve surgery and 12 months of it after I have the surgery. Have you had to deal with this too?

Topic: OT: Visiting near Hill City...can anyone help??
I would like to visit South Dakota in July with my son. I am trying to find a place to stay that isn't just totally outrageously priced. I would like to stay near Hill City since that is about the central point of travel to the areas we want to visit. Does anyone know of any places to stay that are affordable? Any help is appreciated.

Topic: RE: Sioux Falls experiences and Open vs Lap?
Hi Karen,
I had my lap RNY back in 2003 here in Rapid City SD, with Dr Trotter. I am not familiar with the doc's in SF but there are people from here that have traveled to SF to get theres as right now there is only 1 doc in town that does the gastric bypass but not laposcopically. Thats why people are traveling to SF to get it. I have had no regrets with the surgery. I have lost over 125lbs. The only drawback so far is I cannot absorp iron or vitamin D. Not sure why that is, but my doctor is working on it. I was a poster child thru the whole surgery process, I did have alot nausa right after surgery but after a couple of days its settles down. Another downfall for me is that I can eats sweets and I have fallen back into drinking cokes (too many of them). I never had dumping syndrome and any other illness. Just be sure to follow your doctor's instruction with drinking the proteins shakes etc, that was real helpful to me after surgery. Hope this helps. Diana
Topic: Nutritionist
I know one of the first steps before getting approved is to visit with a nutritionist. I attended a lap band seminar with Peter O'Brien and there was a nutritionist there. But, I didn't get her name! I was wondering if anyone can tell me who Sanford usually refers patients to. Thanks

I also have BC/BS and it took 2 tries to get it approved. I did though have the other medical conditions that you don't have. What I want to say is though, don't let things like that stand in your way.
Call your insurance co. and ask just what they need before they will accept you for review. They were very helpful to me and very understanding. So will the dr. be. Your PA or maybe even your og/gyn can help.
I had surgery 5/23/07 with Dr. Glatt. He is very nice and very understanding. He helped to understand the pros and cons of both the lap band and bypass. I had the roux-en y laperscoptic.
It took me about 6 monthsd of reading and thinking before I even mention the thought to anyone. Only you can decide for yourself, but try to get as much information as you can cuz it is the rest of your life.
Good luck in what ever YOU decide.
