Hey everyone, I have a 10, 7 and 1 year old. My biggest problem has been finding family friendly recipes and snack ideas. I had all the health probs and high BMI so I can't speak from experience but I would think if you are going to be self pay anyway then I think it's at least worth it to go to the consult. Dr O'Brien @ Sanford is wonderful (my surgeon) and Dr. Thaemert @ Avera is also very good. Basically it comes down to which hospital you prefer.

Topic: One Year Anniversary
Today is 8/21/07. 52 weeks, or 12 months, or 1 year, yes, 1 YEAR, since my LAP BAND procedure. My weight is 240 lbs. When I had my surgery 1 year ago on 8/21/06, my weight was 320 lbs. So, I have lost 80 pounds. 1.53 pounds/week…6.67 pounds/month…80 pounds/year.
80 pounds. Gone forever. FOREVER!

Hi,
I will be paying for it myself as well - the insurance wants me to be really sick first before offering financial help with the surgery and I prefer to help myself sooner rather than too late (BMI 39) . Going to see Dr. Kirschbaum in Denver - he has a web site - google him. They were very helpful sofar and I have already talked to several of their patients - very encouraging.

Wondering if anyone has had WLS in Sioux Falls who has 80-100lbs to lose (I'm 5'5" and weigh around 225) My insurance will not cover WLS and am wondering if anyone has experience paying for lap band procedure themselves, if Dr's are willing to perform surgery for BMI around 37-38 and Although I am overweight and have been getting progressively heavier for the past 7-8 years I wouldn't say I have had a lot of other health issues due to weight. Some reflux, depression and knee trouble but no HBP or diabetes, sleep apnea etc.
I want to call to set up consult appt but don't want to do it if I am going to get there and have them tell me my health isn't "bad enough" for surgery....
Anyone?

Out of pocket you are talking around $15k give or take. I would assume Dr Thaemert's rates would be about the same.
I have had no problems with the band so far. I am 10 mos out and have lost 70+ pounds. Best thing I ever did.

Hi hun and best of luck in this journey you are begining. It is a difficult one. I believe Sioux Falls or Mitchell are the best places to go for the banding. I do know that medicaid is very picky and will only cover hospitals that are "Centers Of Excellence" So be sure and check to see if the hospital that you do choose is one. I am not sure what it costs. There are two Dr.s in Mitchell. Dr. Reynolds and oh....I forgot the other guy. Anyway, I met them when my hospital decided to start doing lap bandings and they were both very nice! Good luck!
