I did not have lap, but had GNY with Graham 2 years ago.  SOoooo- I won't be able to address your food questions, but you liquid diet and fear - both are normal for both surgeries.  I ate a lot of JELLO, so much that I can hardly tolerate it now.  Soup broth and flavored waters were also a constant.  I only did it for a week because my surgery was moved forward. I wish you the best.  It is a great tool, but only that and it still requires work on our part.  I've lost 160+ pounds but find old habits are hard to break.  I am working hard to make this tool work on a daily basis. Congratulations on your surgery. I wish you the best.

I am a state employee and have DakotaCare.  I have been completing the year long requirement prior to surgery.  Has anyone out there done the year program and been approved?  I am afraid I will have not done enough to get approved.

Topic: Surgery date and questions...again!
Ok...I don't know what happened with my post last night...but here it goes again!   I talked with Aurie from Dr. Obrien's office yesterday and I got my surgery date!!  June 26th for lap band.  Im really excited and nervous at the same time.  I've got a couple questions that Im hoping someone on here can help me with.   First,  has anyone been worried that they will never be able to eat their favorite foods again?  Im talking about shrimp, steak, chicken which all seem to be a problem going down for a lot of people on here with the band.  I know that this is a tool and I have to change my behaviors and eating habits...that's what it is about....but it will really suck if I can't eat anything that I like anymore:( Second, anyone been afraid that having the band will only be one more failure?  I have never been able to admit this to anyone...but I have never lost a single pound on a diet.  Period.  Im scared that I will do this with such hope and enthusiasm and then fail at it.  Anyone else been here? And, lastly...Aurie said that I will be on a two week liquid diet.  How in the heck did you all manage that?  What types of liquids are on the "ok" list for this two week period?  WOW...Im going to need some support with this!!  TWO WEEKS?   Finally, I really am excited to have this new tool and Im praying that I can make it work.  It has to work...I desperately need to improve my health.   Thanks so much everyone...in advance:) Christina

Topic: Needing a PCP...Moving to Vermillion area
Hi everyone, My name is Sheri and I am going to be moving to the Sioux City/Vermillion, SD area soon...like in 2 weeks...eeeeekkk! I desperately need a PCP who can see me, my husband to be, and possibly my 6 year old son. I really dont know who else to ask...I dont want to just pick a name from a long list. I would really like to find someone who has a great bedside manner (especially for my son) and who I dont feel like just another number. If anyone here has any good names or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Topic: RE: So Confused
I have Wellmark BCBS and had my WLS in Minnesota with Dr. Henry Buchwald at the University of Minnesota Fairview (he and the hospital are in network), which is a bariatric center of excellence.  Dr. Buchwald is a world renowned bariatric surgeon and researcher (he is one of the to 10 WLS in the world).  He does the gastric bypass, vertical banding and the duodenal switch.  After much research, I chose the duodenal switch (DS).  I know you're torn between the Lapband and Gastric Bypass, but have you considered the DS?  I also had a lot of co-morbids and of those my diabetes was the worst.  I had a hard time controlling it, and at one point my A1c was as high as 14 (YIKES!).  However, the DS cured my diabetes (before I even left the hospital and before I ever lost any of my weight).  My most recent A1c was 5.3 and I don't take any meds for diabetes.  That to me has been the biggest benefit. With the DS I eat a high protein (at least 100 grams per day), high fat diet.  I eat a lot of meat (mostly steak and chicken), cheese, nuts, and when I have room left over I also eat lower carb high fiber veggies.  Since I'm still in the rapid weightloss phase and not near goal I avoid  carbs as much as possible.  Once at goal, many DSers add carbs into their diet and since we have a normally functioning smaller stomach (the pyloric valve is preserved) we can eat an occasional dessert and not have to worry about dumping.  We DSers malabsorb 80% of the fat we eat, so we have to eat more fat than others.  Frankly, after years of dieting mentality it is weird to be able to eat real butter, full fat sour cream and cheese all while losing weight.  Weirder still that my cholesterol is low, but that is the beauty of malabsorption.  I have to take supplements everyday (being lax with that is not an option, but I'll take it since I no longer have to take diabetic meds or high blood pressure meds) and have to have labs drawn every 6 months the first year and every year after that (so I can know if I am low in any area and tweak my regimine). I invite you to check out the DS forum here on OH and learn more about this great procedure.  One thing I noticed from reading on the forum is how happy and successful everyone was with the DS, and what a normal quality of eating life people had.  The other thing I noticed is that people were with other WLS types were seeking revisions (for example, from the band to the gastric bypass  or from the band/bypass to the DS), but no one with the DS was ever looking for a revision.  You can also check out www.duodenalswitch.com for more information about the procedure. Regardless of what surgery you choose, I wish you the best in your fight to rid yourself of morbid obesity and all the related co-morbids.  Best wishes!

My nut is very knowledgable and strict as hell.  I can't remember her name, but she is the nut for Dr. Thaemert's patients.  He's with the Surgical Institue of Sioux Falls, which is in the McKennan building.

Topic: WLS LW Forum
Here is our creed, if you fit this you are a wls LW and we hope you will join us on the LW forum Here is the link http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/wls_lightweights/ The Lightweight Creed (Created and approved by members of the OH Light-Weights Forum, Jan 2008)

I am a Lightweight. I am only one of many others like me. Together, we are a team. Though our journeys and choices may be different, we are bonded together by the commonality of being Lightweights and the strategies, successes and struggles that entails. It is this bond that defines this board.

I began my journey with a BMI of less than 45 and/or with less than 150 lbs excess weight. My lower BMI and excess weight does in no way make me less deserving of medical intervention, and I should not be made to feel inferior or guilty.

I qualified for WLS because I have co-morbidities, or because my medical history proves that my weight is diet and exercise resistant.

I have worked with my healthcare team to determine the best surgical option for me. I am confident that others have done so as well, so I will refrain from passing judgments.

I will freely share the most accurate information I have, as well as my own personal journey and why I chose my surgery in an informative, educational and respectful way so that others may learn from my experiences.

I respect the decisions of my fellow Lightweights, regardless of the surgery they chose and the nutritional/exercise plans they follow.

I will always promote health and a healthy lifestyle, whether physical or mental; and will respect alternate methods and views toward achieving good health, even if I do not espouse them personally.

I will always be sensitive, honest and respectful when contributing to discussions on this board and in my PMs. I will never flame, demean, invalidate or harass others for their questions or decisions. I will remember, at all times, the difficulties and pain I went through on my own journey and be considerate of others when discussing theirs.

I will always defend and unite with my fellow Lightweights against prejudice and hostility.

I understand it is my responsibility to report offensive conduct to my fellow Lightweights, so that we may deal with offending parties as a united front to preserve the supportive and tolerant atmosphere of our board.

I understand that if my conduct becomes offensive, I will not be welcome to participate on this board any longer.
