Good luck Laurie. I am 5 1/2 years post op and have re-gained 30 pounds that I am working to get off. I lost a total of 165 and regained 30. It is a constant battle. Mine problem was poor food choices, lack of exercise and alcohol. I am getting back to basics this week with 3 days of protein drinks and then adding chicken/fish and veggies later in the week. Hopefully this will jump start me again.

You will have good and bad energy days. Part of it will be due to the protein intake you get in as well as the surgery. If you dont get your protein in you will feel totally washed out. Also, make sure even though you dont have the "trigger" you keep sipping constantly on fluids, with the temperatures rising outside, you dont want to get dehydrated. That too will drain your energy. Good luck on your new road to weight loss.

Topic: Over the hump...
Just to give you an update. Those who had been to Dr Bours support group last month most likely heard me be very pessimistant and down due to I had hit not only a platu, but a weight gain of 10 lbs. Even though I am over a year out, I have not yet gotten to my goal weight (my goal is another 45lb and Dr Bours is 60lbs more). I have lost a total (with the weight gain) 125lbs. Now, I am back to losing (I have taken 6 of the 10lbs off in the last 3 weeks).
This is what I have learned during this time period. First, even though we had weight loss surgery it will still be a battle with our weight and health. The surgery even though we have all heard that it is a tool..it is true.
Second, believe in yourself. You are a good person (keep telling yourself that) and that you are not a failure (keep telling yourself that also). With that go back to the basics after sugery. Watching your portion sizes, eating your protein first, keeping your water intake up.
After that start setting a goal a week, and not looking at the weight loss but at the principles they have engrained in our brains since surgery. Like week one I started weighing my food again and giving up those starbuck coffees I had started to drink. Week two was changing my meal time to deal with my hunger in the evening. Week three gasp yes I joined a gym and have been going. Prior to that week I would have never joined a gym due to being self conscious of how much weight I still had to lose. However, that telling your self thing...made me not care and I have went the last 5 days.
Thanks for listening to my rambling and all the support

Hi, I had all those scared feelings too. I think most people do but Dr. Byrne is really one of the great WLS docs so you are in good hands. The support people at MUSC are great too and they will always get back to you with answers to any questions you have. Tonight (Tuesday 5/20) at 5:30 pm there is a WLS support group meeting at MUSC at the new Ashley River Tower hospital building. The first 30 mins are "meet and greet" time so you could chat with people who have had their surgery and perhaps they could answer some of your questions about life after surgery. Also, make sure you go to one of the Transition Nutrition meetings after your surgery as this is a really good discussion about how to eat once you are past the pureed stage.

Breath deep and then run around the house a couple of times and then burst out crying. (that is what I did the night before my surgery). Being scared is normal. Know that you are doing this to improve your health and lengthen your life and then scream into the pillow and give yourself a stern talking to...I can do this (Repeat it about a million times and then you will start to believe it).
Now that that is out of your system, you can begin the rest of the process. Even if you dont feel the dietician is helpful right now, they will become a great resource for after surgery. Even though they have not had the surgery they do have your best interest in mind. Also, this site is a good resouce, but be careful. There is dieticians here that you can ask help. There is a form for food and nutrition support that I still check even though I am over a year out.
It will be one of the hardest but most rewarding things you do for yourself. Stick in there and when you come here, we will give you as much encouragement as we can. Find people in your area and talk with them, it is very helpful to know you are not alone.

Topic: Old account/New problem
I found my old account and have logged in under it now. I am glad that I found my way back here. For the past two years and especially the last year, I have been drinking heavily. You know, the old transfer addiciton thing. Last week, I made positive steps to make my life healthier. I started to AA last Wednesday and have learned so much about why we do the things that we do to ourselves. I had regained 30 pounds due to the alcohol. Hopefully now with the proper diet and exercise, that will come off. We are going to Myrtle Beach to camp at Ocean Lakes Friday and will be there for 10 days. I plan long walks on the beach and reflecting on the things that got me into the desperate situation that I was in. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

What you are feeling in entirely normal. All of us experienced the same emotions. I remember when I was on the stretcher on the way to the OR being scared to death. Then I said a prayer and felt at peace. Good luck to you.
