This is what I have learned during this time period. First, even though we had weight loss surgery it will still be a battle with our weight and health. The surgery even though we have all heard that it is a tool..it is true.
Second, believe in yourself. You are a good person (keep telling yourself that) and that you are not a failure (keep telling yourself that also). With that go back to the basics after sugery. Watching your portion sizes, eating your protein first, keeping your water intake up.
After that start setting a goal a week, and not looking at the weight loss but at the principles they have engrained in our brains since surgery. Like week one I started weighing my food again and giving up those starbuck coffees I had started to drink. Week two was changing my meal time to deal with my hunger in the evening. Week three gasp yes I joined a gym and have been going. Prior to that week I would have never joined a gym due to being self conscious of how much weight I still had to lose. However, that telling your self thing...made me not care and I have went the last 5 days.
Thanks for listening to my rambling and all the support

Hi, I had all those scared feelings too. I think most people do but Dr. Byrne is really one of the great WLS docs so you are in good hands. The support people at MUSC are great too and they will always get back to you with answers to any questions you have. Tonight (Tuesday 5/20) at 5:30 pm there is a WLS support group meeting at MUSC at the new Ashley River Tower hospital building. The first 30 mins are "meet and greet" time so you could chat with people who have had their surgery and perhaps they could answer some of your questions about life after surgery. Also, make sure you go to one of the Transition Nutrition meetings after your surgery as this is a really good discussion about how to eat once you are past the pureed stage.
103 pounds gone!!!! Yeah for me
Now that that is out of your system, you can begin the rest of the process. Even if you dont feel the dietician is helpful right now, they will become a great resource for after surgery. Even though they have not had the surgery they do have your best interest in mind. Also, this site is a good resouce, but be careful. There is dieticians here that you can ask help. There is a form for food and nutrition support that I still check even though I am over a year out.
It will be one of the hardest but most rewarding things you do for yourself. Stick in there and when you come here, we will give you as much encouragement as we can. Find people in your area and talk with them, it is very helpful to know you are not alone.
