SC, BlueCross BlueShield dropping coverage of obesity surgery for employees
(Charleston-AP) Sept. 3, 2004 - State government is not the only large employer telling workers their health insurance will no longer cover a popular and expensive surgery to help obese people lose weight.
BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has stopped providing coverage for the surgery for its 10,000 workers in the state.
BlueCross BlueShield medical director Doctor Ashby Jordan says there have been "some horrendous complications." The insurer tells employers buying its policies it will cover the surgery only if employers request it.
The Budget and Control Board says it will drop the procedure in January from coverage for state workers, retirees and others participating in the plan that covers 370,000 people. The state's health plan paid for 370 of the surgeries last year.
