I am scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday. I have heard some people say that you are supposed to eat light a week or so before the big day. My doc did not say what I could or could not do. Please give me some advice. I have been trying to eat better and I have actually lost 2 pounds!!!!! I know that it is not a lot, but hell it is something!!!! I am also interested to hear from any patients of Dr. Byrne's in Charleston. I want to know how long he leaves the NG tube in after the surgery.

My surgeon, Dr. Dalton *****ett, had me on a low-carb diet 2 weeks prior to my surgery. This was to help shrink my liver so that he could do it lap vs. open. I did not have to eat "light" as long as I stayed in and around 23 grams of carbs per day. I did, however, have to give up solid foods and drink only liquids, plus some phospho soda the day before my surgery to help clean me out. Each surgeon is different and yours may have no specific diet requirements for his patients prior to surgery. I don't want to sound mean/rude, but your question on what you should and should not be eating should be posed to your surgeon and not to people on here. With that in mind, pick up the phone and call him. You certainly don't want to take the chance of messing up your surgery date because you assumed something wrong, or got bad advice in instances like this from people *****ally shouldn't be giving it.
