Do you know anyone that has been approved through SC State BCBS Insurance?  Or....Do you know anyone who works with the health department and what types of insurance WILL APPROVE gastric bypass???????  I have a friend in need of information.

Thanks,.

As far as I know, BCBS will not cover any type of WLS.  I have a friend that wants to get the surgery, but BCBS will not cover it.  If she wants the surgery, she will have to self pay.  I do not know anyone who has tried to appeal their decision, but I am sure there is someone out there.  I also have a co-worker who said that she was lucky she had BCBS Alabama through her husband's employer because BCBS South Carolina will not.

Sorry I could not be more help.  Hopefully someone else will chime in with their experiences.

BCBS of SC GOV"T and Federal Employee plans are fantastic!  Contrats!  So many people fall out of the protocol to surgery because of insurance!  BTW, how long did you have to go for a weight loss program? I hear its rather short.

I have BCBS, I work for the county government, so I'm not sure about other forms of BCBS, but they paid almost 100% of my surgery. I had met my out of pocket for the year already, so I think I ended up paying about $300 due to something lab related that was out of network. I could have argued that charge I suppose, but I was so grateful that they had paid everything else that I gladly wrote a check for it.

Is your BCBS under the state plan? my husband is in law enforcement and we are very interested in weight loss surgery for him but was told that BCBS did not cover the cost of the surgery. Any help would be great so we can have an idea of what to do :)

My doctor nor the insurance required any kind of weight loss program. I had proof of all my attempts at weigh****chers, diet pill doctors, and a complete history log that I had kept for about 3 years. Maybe that helped me.

State of SC EXCLUDES bariatric surgery at this time.   They are doing a study which should be completed sometime in 2014.  At that time, they may or may not choose to offer WLS.   It is all about the $$$.

My Boyfriend & I inquired first about the new FDA approved diet pill, Qsymia.  We met all health requirements BUT found this out too.  That SC STATE covers NO weight loss help.  My boyfriend was searching further into bariatric surgery sounds more sensible & long-term safer effect.  If someone else or you has found or find out anything different, I welcome your help/ suggestions.  I find it hilarious we are in the "grease frying" state but the insurance won't help with lowering BMI.  I know we got here ourselves but not wanting to die young. THANKS!

I had BC/BS of SC but not thru the state & they paid 90% of my surgery.  Weather they approve you or not is not based on the insurance Company itself but on the plan that your employer chose.  You need to check the specifics of your company's plan.  If it doesn't have an exclusion for WLS then you need to call them and find out what the requirements for WLS surgery are, if it has an exclusion there is nothing you can do.  but if they don't you need to meet their requirements.  Good luck...
