say a prayer for my granddaughter
My 8 year old granddaughter was attacked by a pit bull dog this afternoon. It happened at a neighbors house when she was playing in their backyard with the family's son. She went to pet the dog and it jumped up and bit her in the face and knocked her down and bit her right leg. She suffered deep puncture wounds and tears on her leg and her mouth was lacerated to the point that her upper lip was almost ripped off her face. They had to get a plastic surgeon to work on her mouth and leg so we are praying that the scaring will be minimal. She is home tonight and on an antibiotic and heavy pain meds, but she was hurting really bad and can't eat anything unless it goes through a straw. I worry about infection setting in and pray she doesn't have much pain over the next few days. So far my son hasn't heard anything from DHEC or animal control about this and he had to call the police to see if anything had been reported and why no one had contacted him. The police filed a report and went to the peoples house but they weren't there and none of their dogs were there either, so we still don't have a clue as to what is going to happen. We don't know if the dog is up to date on its rabies shots or if she needs to be treated for that. It ****** me off when I see stories on the news about this happening to others and it gets attention right away, but we don't get so much as one call to even see if she is Ok or to find out what happened or what will happen to the dog and the owners. What is wrong with the system and don't they give a crap about a child who could have lost her life or might be scarred for the rest of her life. Most of all, why do people continue to keep dogs that are known to turn on people and risk things like this or worse happening. I know there is a risk with any animal but pitbulls are infamous for this and I think the owners should be held accountable for what the animal does. Anyway, thanks for listening and pray that everything goes well for her.
Hugs!
Mary

Mary, I am so sorry to hear about your grand daughter. That is really awful. And for another parent to not be concerned about what their dog did to another child is uncalled for. I know I personally would be beating their door down to get to them and to kill that dog that did that to my child. That poor baby she's going to not only be physically scarred for life but also going to have a fear of dogs as well. I'm so sorry. (((HUGS)))
Please let us know what happens and how her progress goes. I feel so bad for her. She will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers.
Mary,
I hope your granddaughter is okay, I will add her to my list of prayers. Don't worry, DHEC will investigate. My dog bit my son and he required stichtches on his arm (only 2). Our dogs were fighting and my son got in the middle. They are 1 year old Carolina dogs. DHEC was knocking at my door the next day. They observed the dogs for a little while, then we had to keep them quarantined for 10 days. The were not allow out without a leash, and we could not take them to the dog park. She came back in 10 days and re observed them to make sure they didn't show signs of rabies.
Call your local DHEC and inquire about when they are going to investigate the bite.
Mary,
Its awful that this happened to your grand daughter. My husband was attacked by a german shepherd when he was two years old and it did the same thing to his lip and the scar is barely notaceable now. He is almost 34 and they didn't have the really good stitches that they have now so I think that her face should heal good. The thing that scares me the most would be the emotional scars, my husband still hates german shepherds and didnt even really care for dogs until we were married and I brought a lab home that adores him. But I will pray for her and your family and I hope that you get justice in the situation. To check for rabies the dog will have to be put down so they really need to find it.
Hey there my friend, I am so sorry to hear about your grand-daughter. We will pray for her and you keep us posted. I love animals but I am with you, if they can turn like that breed is known to then people should not be allowed to own them, or there should be restrictions with contact with people,
