Need Info on Dr. Bour and self pay
I originally went to Dr B for the band.. and was talked into the RNY instead and was so glad that I was! I had 150 lbs to lose.. I was self pay also.. The quotes back then (almost 2 yrs ago) was 16,500 for band(hospital only) and 23,500 for rny.. once you add in everything it came to about 32k.. worth every penny! It was like buying a new car for my body! lmao.. good luck!!! dr b is GREAT

I am scheduled for RNY on May 13th with Dr. Bour. I think he and his whole staff are wonderful. They all remember your name and seem to know everyone personally. Not at all like some doctor's offices where you feel like just a number. I've heard some people say that he is not very personable, but I've only had good experiences with him so far. I think he is just very passionate about his work and wants us to suceed. In my opinion, you would be in very good hands if you decide to go with Dr. Bour. Melissa
I originally went to see Dr. Bour for a lap band, but I have severe gastric reflux disease. I went to the first information session and he said that a lap band can make acid reflux worse, so I knew then that it would not be for me. Also, I was just concerned about lap band because it hasn't been around all that long so there is really no information on how long it lasts, etc. I would suggest that if you are thinking of seeing Dr. Bour, go to one of his information sessions. They are very informative and he gives you alot of good information on both procedures. He will also answer any questions that you might have after the session. He's great! Melissa
I too was going to opt for banding since I had about 100 lbs to lose. But after researching the banding I chose Gastric and discussed my reasons with Dr Bour in 3 areas and he agreed with all of them.
1) As someone else has mentioned if you have reflux it will get worse.
2) You can stretch the limits and literally stretch your esohpagus creating a little stomach right in your esophagus. If I could control my eating I wouldn't need any procedure so I could see me doing exactly this.
3) The band in inserting a manmade item in your body that is subject to wear and tear and is not a lifetime product, so unless your really up there in age or care to have two surgeries I would go for the Gastric.
I know these seem like impossibilities but I personally didn't want to chance it. I had Gastric on Mar. 11, 2008 and do not regret going this route. Best of luck in your decision.
Thanks Kat
I go next week for a seminar with Dr Bour. The person I talked to there also recommends the bypass based on my BMI.
One of my biggest concerns with it is a tendency to have my blood sugar drop very suddenly and having to have a sweet juice quickly. I am also intolerant to artifical sweeteners making sugar free products a no-no for me.
