Pre Op Diet
Saturday I started gearing up to my pre-op Diet (I started fully today). The first thing I tried was the samples of Unjury that my NUT gave me. I tried the Strawberry Smoothie My first thought is if I have to live off of this stuff for 8 weeks, I'm going to go crazy!! Luckily we went to the Vitamin Shop and looked at some other protien drinks. We found one that was in an 11oz can and I tried the banana cream, believe it or not, it was much better. I said that I could possibly live with this stuff (hopefully the other flavors are as good). This morning I tried one of the protien drinks recommended by the NUT. I tried the VHP Vanilla drink, It was the best tasting yet (I tried the vanilla this morning and will try the chocolate for lunch). I am supposed to have two drinks and a VHP snack along with a "sensable" supper. I was afraid that just by drinking the drink, that I would still be hungry afterwards, but surprisingly, I felt "content". I might be able to make it through. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
You will definitely make it through...so hang in there. All docs are different in their pre-op and post-op diets...but the post stuff is pretty much hte same.
We all have just had to try different proteins to find the right one for us. Everyone has one that they think is wonderful....and the next guy thinks it stinks...lol. Also, after your surgery your tastes will change. You may love one thing now but hate it after surgery.
May not have been a lot of help....sorry. When is your surgery scheduled????
Thanks for the comeback. We've had quite a quasi-setback here My wife just got a call about her colonoscopy. When they did it, they discovered a red area that looked like a fold of skin. They took a biopsy and called yesterday evening and said that it seems pre-cancerous. My mother-in-law had colon cancer and my father-in-law had a pollip removed also (so she has the possibility for colon cancer from both sides). The doctor is scheduling another colonoscopy, along with an upper GI. She was really upset (she was getting to look forward to surgery). To top it all off, my wife has a WLS date of April 23rd, and I got a call yesterday setting my date at May 5th. I guess she is going to have to drop out for now (hopefully I can take her date, she wants me to continue). I guess it's kind of bittersweet, I'm glad about my surgery, but am very concerned about my wife.
Hi... Sorry about your wife's setback. I will pray that test show it's benign. I too have been working on a high protein, low carb diet (no - no date yet - but all in due time. I did try the EAS protein shakes and found them to be toloerable. I found them at food lion. They have 17g protein, 2 net carbs and only 110 calories. I too was VERY surprised at feeling satisfied after just have a shake to drink. I also take a multi-vitamins and B12 to keep my nutrition up - but that's just a matter of choice. I wish you and your wife well. Keep me posted!
Thanks for the reply, I talked with Dr. Antonetti and she has an appointment with him on the 13th to discuss the "developments". She has an upper GI on the 12th and she's trying to talk him into doing the colonoscopy at the same time. Hopefully we'll get some answers then about if she'll proceed with the WLS or postphone. Now the hard part is waiting
Hi, I am seeing the same group you are. Dr. Strickland is doing a lap-band in 3 weeks so I just started the pre-op diet also. I went to my local GNC and bought the caramel chocolate whey protein mix (GNC brand). It delivers 20 gms of protein per shake. It actually is pretty good as long as made with skim-milk instead of water but it is tolerable with water too. I know after surgery we can't have milk. I am going to try the banana next, cause the GNC guy said it was pretty good too. I am sorry to hear about your wife. I hope everything gets clear for her too. I think it is great you are doing this together... what a great support system you both will have!
