Well, I did it!
Yes, I am officially registered for the Greenville News 5K on the 26th of this month and also for the Cooper River Bridge Run on April 5th. I won't be running but i'll be walking with the best of them! LOL! If anyone else is planning on walking either of these I would love you to walk with me! I am hoping to do 1 per month s I need to figure out some others to walk in also.

Karen, Melissa and I are also registered for the Greenville News 5K, we are planning on running it though.
We are currently training to run the Reedy River 10 on March 1st. I believe they also have a 5K walk/ run that you can register for.
Here is a link you can go to in order to find more races.

Good for you Karen. Thats great!! I wish you alot of success. If I can help in anyway-let me know
The 4 things I have learned over the past 1/2 year of running are
1-splurge and buy the good running/walking sneakers-they are worth every penny
2-stretching beforehand is good-stretching after your run/wal;k is ESSENTIAL to not injuring yourself
3-NEVER worry about time or how long it took you or competing, just starting-enjoying-and finishing your walk/run is the most important part. Better time will come with time. I had THE BEST time running my marathon, talking with family and friends on my cell phone during it, enjoying the people that came out to support me, high five-ing little kids out on the road waving.....if you don't enjoy it you will stop doing it
4-Its not how fast you go-its how long you go. A long run/walk will give you more benefits than a short fast run or sprints.
Sorry-don't mean to sound like some professional doleing out advice when not asked-but I just thought I would share what I learned--ESPECIALLY about the stretching
Good luck!!
The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.....John Bingham aka The Penguin
Well Hey stranger! How have you been? Kathy (R?) and I have gotten involved in IRUN and also started their fitness camp (beginners) on Mondays. Last night we stretched about every muscle in our bodies and also worked on our balance. You should have seen the 6 of us on top of picnic tables in Cleveland Park laying and stretching and bending - it was quite amusing! (Especially the Superman) You need to hook up with the intermediate or advanced group. The beginners walk on Saturday mornings at 7:30am at shelter 5 in Cleveland Park. It is really fun and Holly is an excellent trainer. Best of all it is free!! The fitness camps are only $99 for 6 weeks. Go figure - I actually PAY someone for torturing me!!
Thanks for the great advice. We are all here to learn from each other and I want to learn the correct way to run so I will stay with it. You have been an inspiration to me actually running a marathon at only 9 months out from surgery! I am 8 months out now and I am no where near being ready even to run! I learned the importance of stretching last Saturday. I felt SO GOOD! We walked 2.2 miles and I felt so refreshed. The Phase I - walk to run program (also free) starts Feb. 2nd so I am getting closer to starting to run. I wish more of the guys and gals on the board would take advantage of this free program.
