OT: Finding Jobs in the Upstate
Good Morning guys!
I need a little help. My hubby is still unemployed. He hasn't actually gotten a job since we graduated in 2006. He looks and looks, but no one calls him for interviews. I know he is trying, and it really bugs him that he doesn't have a job. Unfortunately, he has minimal experience from doing contracts work with his mom's company, but no other experience. Thus, he is trying to find an entry level position. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for my hubby. He has tried the temp agencies in the area, but they all say they don't have anything for him. We even paid a career counselor an obscene amount of money, and still no results. I am at my wits end. I didn't think life was supposed to be like this. We can't make it much longer on my salary because I keep having to miss work for Dr.s Appointments and I am hourly. The school bills from Furman are becoming overwhelming. And we can't even draw unemployment or anything because hubby was never really employed to begin with. *sigh* Any advice would be muchly appreciated.
Sorry for whining. Maybe I should get some cheese too.
Thanks!
Cynthia

What is his degree in?
You know, if he can't find anything in his field, he may just have to get a job in retail or a restaurant or something. Even without experience he can a job stocking or something, especially now that the holidays are coming up. It would at least help with the bills until something better comes along.
His degree is in history. I am working on convincing him to try the retail thing, but he is kinda antisocial, so he doesn't like the idea of having to work with people. We are working on brainstorming places that he might enjoy working.

He is looking at working in Contracts administration. He basically made sure that all the signatures and info was correct for his mom's company. They provided workers for government projects. I don't think he can weld. :)

He needs to get over the anti-social thing... cause in the job world.. that just doesn't fly!
He has a degree... so first thing he can do is register with the school system to sub... I have a neighbor who subs for Greenville County.. and if she wants to .. she can work 5 days a week.. they can keep her that busy... she picks and chooses what days she's willing to work.. and she loves it!
And the post office had an ad in the paper for holiday help.. it's not glamours.. but it's something..
The reason I ask about the welding.. is because welders are so scarce these days.. the company I work for is paying TOP DOLLAR for welders...
I rock..!!!
Whine anytime ... I feel for you both!
Sadly, I have no solutions to offer. Both my kids are college grads and they both looked for MONTHS before they got that first "after college job". Hang in there, and tell him to send a resume somewhere every single day.
A friend of ours worked for awhile with Enterprise Rental Car ... they have a "management trainee program", and only hire college grads. It's definitely entry level, and even washing the rental cars is involved ... but it's a paycheck, and experience.
Sending hopeful thoughts your way ...
Here is a work from home company that will allow him to get a starter and work from home.
