approval worries
I am in the process of trying to have RNY surgery at MUSC. At 5'3: 235-240, I barely meet the requirements for surgery. I do have a BMI >40. I have been diagnosed with GERD, pre-diabetes, depression, and I have a lot of joint pain in my knees and ankles. I have researched this option for many years and I have tried many different diets since I was about 15. I am nervous about the fact that I do not have any major complications such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol. etc. I dont want those either!! I want to have my surgery so I can once and for all get healthy and stay healthy!!! I am sorry for the rambling, but it just helps to get it all out lol.
If your BMI is 40 and up you dont even need to have any co-morbidities. You have a couple already so I wouldn't worry. I am also 5'3'' and weighed 247.8 at my highest weight when I started the WLS process. I also had GERD, sleep apnea, joint pain, back pain, blood pressure that kept going higher and higher with my weight gain, and horrible swelling of my legs and feet. I had no problems qualifying for the surgery. A friend of mine had a BMI of 34 and had to gain weight to have the surgery even with her severe asthma, but she had no problem gaining 15 pounds and got approved with the same insurance co. that I had. Good luck and try not to worry, lol, easier said than done I know.
Take care!
