Does anyone have experience with BCBS of South Carolina?

I was wanting to find out if anyone has had to deal with BCBS of SC for your surgery?  I live in Texas, but my husband's company is based out of SC so that is the form of BCBS we have, and seems like they never want to pay for anything.  Just wanted to see what all they want you to do before they will approve you for the surgery and such. Thank you, Sherri

Sherri-
I used BCBS of SC, but it also is company based. The company chooses a plan, so each could be different. The easiest way is to call the company and ask your benefits for weight loss surgery that is medical necessity.

I also have BCBS of SC but as Laurie said it is based on what the company plan is. Mine was wonderful it paid 100% without any referals of pre diets or any of that. The only thing mine did not cover was the 300.00 mental exame. Call your insurance and ask questions. Good Luck. Marcey

Hi Sherri...

I was in the same boat.. I work for a company based out of Mass... So my insurance is with BCBS of Mass.... but like the other said.. it all depends on what your company pays for.. I was lucky enough to have a company that encouraged getting help for obesity.. and they paid for everything with the exception of the physc eval.. which was $300

You can go online to the company web-site.. put in the company group number and it will show you what that company pays for.. do NOT try and get the information by telephone.. I advice is to get whatever information you can from the web-site.. you then have it in writing what they require.. etc.. you don't have to rely on someone in an office who doesn't know what they are talking about...

I went through BCBS SC website and contacted them.  I heard back lastnight and was told they are researching it for me and will get me an answer quickly...so we shall see.  Thank you all for the suggestions and help.

Like I said in my other reply. I have BCBS of Sc and it is company based and has a clause that they do not cover surgery for obesity related surgery. But I called and ask about MORBID obesity and they said yes.. Give it a try. You can appeal too. Dont give up.  My email is [email protected]
