Dehydration is REAL
My sister, Margo (she had open RNY about 2 years ago), was put in the hospital last Tuesday with severe dehydration. She thought she had a stomach bug and had really bad diarrhea for about 10 days, along with vomiting and a fever for one day. Well, in 4 days she lost 20 lbs - yep, 20 lbs. By the time she went to the doctor they told her to go straight to the hospital and get checked in. They could barely get a blood pressure reading on her and when they did it was 61 over 42. She was almost dead!!!! They started an IV drip in each arm and loaded her full of potassium and saline and whatever else. She had complete renal failure (her kidneys failed). It took her a week to get stabilized even though she still has diarrhea. They found out it was salmonella poisoning.
She almost died from dehydration. Please make sure you get enough fluids (and keep them in you) otherwise you might end up in the same boat. Hopefully she won't have any kidney problems although it is too soon to tell.
Most of us know to sip, sip, sip, but maybe this will reach someone that doesn't know how severe dehydration can become if left untreated.
Please pray that my sister makes a fully recovery!
thanks,
Susan
Oh no, Susan! Your family sure has had their share of scares lately!! I am so sorry. Thank goodness she got in the hospital and got some IV fluids. My doctor put this fear into me upon discharge, and told me about the vicious cycle of how it all starts. He said you get nauseated and then you cant drink and then you get dizzy and want to sleep and it all starts.
I am so sorry for all of this. My thoughts are with you.
hugs,
J.
Yes, too real. At a little over a year out, I started feeling strange late in the afternoon. By the time I got home, I was real shaky and sweaty and was also experiencing the upset stomach (diarrhea). Well, as gross as it sounds, I passed out while sitting on the toilet. Luckily, I had just slumped over to the side and stopped at my tub. Got up and went and sat on the edge of my bed. Within seconds, I come back around laying back on the bed from where I had passed out again. By this point, I'm a little freaked out so call my sister to tell her what was going on and ask her to check in on me later. She was wanting me to call EMS and I didn't want to. She happened to be across the road from an EMS station though and went across the road to talk with them. Before she calls me back, I pass out for the 3rd time. When she called back, the EMS folks had me check my blood pressure. I took it several times with it being in the 80's/40's each time. The EMS folks told me I needed to call 911..... Me in my foolishness told my sister that I didn't want to..... I just wanted to see if it would pass. She called them for me, then called and told me she did it. At least I had the opportunity to get clothes on by the time they got to my house and make it downstairs! They checked me out and said the only question left was which hospital I wanted to go to. I was treated in the ER for dehydration (pumping me full of fluids). They wouldn't let me go home until I could stand up without my blood pressure bottoming out. Having said all of this, my case is no where near as severe as your sister. Drinking water is a good thing.......dehydration****s you out of nowhere.

I am so sorry to hear about Margo. That is terrible! Let her know she is in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she feels better soon.
I can go the distance... I do not care how far... I know every mile will be worth my while.
My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my DOGS already think I am!
